"I actually refused to watch the Cat in the Hat and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I just knew they would ruin Dr. Seuss for me. Let's pursue one of your questions a bit more: The book was horrid enough, good god! why a film??? Give us some examples. I'm putting anything based on John Grisham in this category, along with any Lifetime movie based on any romance/her man done her wrong book.(I know I'm beating a dead horse, but I think LOTR falls into the category "for the love of god!!! why could you not just follow the damn book???!!!) so I won't talk about it anymore. I promise. Really. Well, I'll try not to anyway. " [More]

Reverse: Movies into books
By honeysuckle in CinLit
"What do you think of movies turned into books? The first time I ever noticed one was Star Wars. Books based on movies tend to be quite bad. What other books have you come across that were based on movies? " [More]

"Re: directors who grew up on comic books and movies . . . I hadn't thought of that. What about someone like Stephen King (I'm speaking of him as a writer, NOT a director/producer/actor)? He grew up immersed in comics and movies, but he's very good (or he used to be) at developing full-fledged characters in his books. Does that background create writers in a different way than it creates directors? " [More]

Italian movie
By honeysuckle in missing a film
"I saw this movie about 17 years ago. I think it was Italian. It had two words in the title and the first word was similar to the second word, but I can't remember either. It was about a young man who was in the circus . . . I think. I can't even remember the storyline exactly. He was either split personality or transgendered or something. Good grief. And maybe a serial killer? This is driving me nuts because I can't remember the name of this movie. " [More]

"I know I'm coming into this discussion on the tail-end of it, but I would like to say that the very fact that you started this thread is heartening.I agree that there does seem to be a self-imposed standard among the members, something I haven't seen on other sites, which is the reason this is the first site in which I've ever actively participated. The discussions are lively and intelligent and I don't feel the need to take a shower after I've been here.I have in my short time on Spout -- five days -- been befriended and insulted. I'm enjoying the new friends and forgetting the other. I don't think the person even realized that she said offensive things, so I didn't respond to her comments. Why make it worse? " [More]

"Well, I will give you this: taken as a whole, the LOTR trilogy is superior to the other cinematic trilogies. It's consistent in style, content, actors, FX, etc, probably because they filmed simultaneously. The Star Trek movie series is a mess, so it would have to be better than that.As for Indiana Jones, I loved #1, liked #2, and number 3 . . . well, it sucked. Star Wars I liked, Empire Strikes Back I loved, and Return of the Jedi . . . it sucked too.I never really got into Superman too much. I have a friend out there now who's cringing. I am a big fan of Smallville, even though it's just an angst-ridden teenage show. That all-American Clark they've got really floats my boat., but that's another story.I guess on LOTR, we'll just have to agree to disagree. Nothing wrong with that. After all, the world would be pretty boring if we all thought the same way. " [More]

Re: Books into Movies: Lord of ...

"Well said. I think character development is sacrificed at the altar of technology. Movies, like books and poetry and song, originally rose from our need to commune with each other. It's through story -- and characters in the story -- that we find common ground. That mutual experience -- those magical hours in the dark -- is a form of intimacy. This group intimacy bonds us together. How else could we, the members of Spout, who live in so many different parts of the country, have so much to say to each other? We've been intimate without realizing it.The same thing happens with literature and music. If the glue in the shared experience of movie watching -- the story and characters -- dissolves, the bond breaks. I just can't get as emotionally invested in CG as I can in people and the things that happen to them. And please don't leave me hanging, Paul . . . sci-fi geeks or what? " [More]
