"Bringing Down the House, the true story of six MIT students who won millions of dollars playing Black Jack in Vegas, has been lying around my room for several months. With the upcoming movie release I decided to give it a go. I was positively surprised by the book, especially by its honesty (regarding the motivations and opinions of the main characters) and its suspense. The movie on the other hand was pretty good but not as dazzling as the book. To be frank the movie wasn't as much based on the book but rather loosely inspired by it. The main topic, students going to Vegas to play Black Jack was of course present, but almost all the surrounding story was changed. What I liked most were Kevin Spacey's performance, he did a very good job portraying a greedy professor, and the scenes in Vegas. On the other hand the whole moralizing throughout the movie and the robot competition were the weakest parts. If the movie awoke your interest in Black Jack and if you would like to discover more ... "I've seen Juno on Monday (as usual I'm a day behind with blogging ;) ) and I loved it. It's a realistic and funny comedy filled with snappy remarks and awkward scenes that provokes loud laughter. I can recommend this movie wholeheartedly to anyone who likes the Royal Tenenbaums and Amélie. " [More]

Entertaining but not Amélie

"This movie was recommended to me because I'm a huge fan of Amélie. And so I was expecting a sweet and funny romantic comedy. Unfortunately, Elizabethtown couldn't live up to these high expectations. Nevertheless, it is an entertaining movie with a hilarious road-trip at the end, but overall there are too many scenes that just drag along. If you like Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst you might get a kick out of it, for me, I will stick with Amélie for the times I need a dose of sweet romance :). " [More]
Black Sheep

"A ruthless farmer genetically engineers a new race of sheep to revolutionize farming. However, when environmental activists steal one of the by-products and accidentally set it loose, the sheep suddenly develop a liking for blood and humans start transforming into super-sheep. And Henry, a former farm boy with a sheep-phobia, is the only one who can try to stop them...This is probably the best splatter movie I've seen since Braindead, which incidentally was also shot in New Zealand. In addition to the cool and low-key special effects the movie is full of hilarious scenes and funny lines. Especially the dialogs between Henry and Experience, the environmental activists, are laugh out loud funny. " [More]

Stephen King's Desperation

"Desperation is one of King's more disturbing and claustrophobic novels, dealing with a small town in the middle of nowhere which is visited by an ancient evil.Mike Garrs masterfully manages to transfer the story line onto the screen, keeping very close to the original. Of course, he had the help of a very professional cast with Ron Perlman as a perfect Collie Entrangian (he was just like I imagined him). However, a word of warning is necessary: This movie is not for the faint of heart nor for people with arachnophobia. "When I was a child we had several traditions for Christmas Eve (the day the presents are unpacked in Switzerland). First, we went to church at 5pm. Second, we ate canapé for dinner while watching Santa Claus. As I remember it, it was the perfect family Christmas movie with a nice happy end and of course, lots of presents. Unfortunately, television stations replaced this movie with The Santa Clause, which I admit is very funny and cool as well, but still it just ain’t the same ;). " [More]
