Good character development

"Must admit, I did not read this book, I stopped at #4 and I've only seen the first 2 HP movies. I did enjoy this one immensely though. It's difficult, I'm sure to make a kids movie based on a 900 page book (or whatever) with tons of side plots and twists. Other directors have had difficulty pleasing the masses with these book to screen endeavors, but I think Yates did a fine job. There's a fine combination of effects, plot, character development and (for me) an element of surprise. Really dark movie for the age of some kids I saw in the theater, but it's up to the parents how much they want to expose their kids to and when. " [More]

"I like David Lynch, quite a bit, but this series of shorts is annoying beyond even being ironic. Those are 40 minutes of my life I will never get back again and didn't do anything for me.The character is an abusive and ignorant farting wacko. Otehr characters include a bratty child, totally wacked out abused wife, overbearing mother in law, hunting buddy and a guy with a stick caught in his mouth. It's surprisingly uninteresting for Lynch. " [More]
True to the book

"Asia Argento did a fabulous job adapting JT's tale for the screen. When I read the book many years ago I was left feeling a bit disturbed. Then I found out they planned to make it into a film & was naturally curious. The casting sounded great, so I was fairly sure they'd be able to re-create that uncomfortable feeling. They did that and more, captivating, daunting and very well acted.Argento gives a huge nod to Harmony Korine with this feature, which I think people call 'white trash exploitation'. " [More]

"Yep, Steve McQueen is amazing! This is a great film to watch, thrilling, intriguing and well thought out dialogue. I especially like SF filmed movies so I can ponder the continuity of car chases and other sequential plots. There hasn't been a better car chase scene since Bullitt, except for maybe Grindhouse. One of the films I own and enjoy watching over & over again. " [More]

"Meh, total lack of character development in this one, nobody really captured my interest. And wtf was up with the father continually finding the kids? Even for a zombie movie that was unbelieveable. I know Fresnadillo is no Danny Boyle, but he should have tried to live up to the original a little. The zombies are reduced to rabid people running the streets in packs. Thank God for the helicopter scene or I would have been 100% disappointed. " [More]

"This was a particularly enjoyable low-budget film! Archie Andrews is an endearing character and there's a perfect mix of humor, political satire and gore! I found myself enthralled from beginning to end with no lulls in the storyline at all. Recommended film for campy horror enthusiasts. " [More]
Happy surprise

"Ok, I will see just about any movie about zombies that comes out. Call ti an obsession/fascination, whatever. I'll see movies about zombie sheep, ghosts, futuristic or historic zombies, even zombie comedies. Blame it on Romero, I'm not sure who exactly can be blamed/thanked for it.Anyhow, 28 Days Later pleasantly surprised us, our Zombies Anonomous group had an outing to view this when it came out as the newest offering in our little genre of joy. Nobody ever goes into this sort of movie thinking it's going to be a masterpiece, half the time you expect to tease the actors for not knowing the basic principles of killing & survival. We were enthralled by this one! It was action packed, exciting, had a few twists & turns and the combined 'end of the world' aspect to work against. One of the best! " [More]
Better the first time

"Danny Boyle is really a terrific director! I've seen everything he's ever done and much of it does stand the test of time. The first 2 or 3 times I saw Life Less Ordinary, I loved it. Fresh, funny and..well, Ewan McGregor and Holly Hunter at her funniest. Cameron Diaz has grown to the highest annoying factor ever, so when this was on cable the other day I wasn't nearly as enthralled as I used to be. It's too bad really, but as long as Boyle still puts out new stuff I think it'll be just fine. " [More]

"Ok, a movie made in '99 that was based in '81..WTF?! But ok, that's totally cool, retro before that 80's retro shit really took off (by the way, is that ending any time soon?)All star cast with that Altmanesque running theme, you know, they're all connected in the grand scheme of things...I enjoyed it though, it's so true to life, it touches my inner neurotic. There are aspects of this movie that I believe everyone on the planet can relate to. Unlike Magnolia, Crash or other movies that have followed in Short Cuts wake. Do not mis Elvis Costello and the funny end credits. " [More]
A bit exhausting

"Ying Liang does it again, but this time with a lot more duration. His new film is good, it's interesting, but it's very long winded. The characters leave a bit to be desired, they're lost and you really just want them to be found, but it's a frustrating hope to hold out for two hours. The setting is a poverty stricken town in China that is in danger due to a chemical plant, a common problem in much of China, I am led to believe. There is little to no hope of emotional happiness and the desolation moves from the outside world, penetrating everyone's lives. They attempt to escape by gambling the mah jong and drinking while the 'other half' toin and attempt to get by day to day.I left this film with a feeling of despair, but also saw the cautionary tale Liang was attempting to get across. A good film to see if you are into hopelessness. Or if you're a Lars Von Trier fan...I'd draw very loose comparisons to Breaking the Waves. " [More]

"This is one of the most beautiful and moving films I've seen. The camera angles are amazing and slowly revealing. There's a lot going on in the film and you can easily get carried off with the journey. I had teh pleasure of meeting the director, who wrote the story while in SF last year, he had some terrific insights and I would be stoked to see any future films he comes out with. The music in the movie is absolutely amazing, the sound is very much what brings you into the film full force and the closing song is utterly unbelieveable. Must see! " [More]
