  • Don't watch this with a serious attitude

    Killer Pad  (2007)

Okay, now I know a lot of people out there are going to watch this and think it is incredibly stupid.  I actually thought it was cute.  I just love how Niave these guys are and how funny the conclusions they jump too are.  Bobby Lee (MadTV) had a cameo in this and was as adorable as ever as the real estate agent.

Just don't have any expectations when you watch this and enjoy the silliness of it!

  • Was There Really a Carter Simms?

This was a movie about a skeptical ghost hunter that was offered $5,000 to investigate a home for paranormal activity.  She also had a cameraman and a journalist and a crazy religous nutcase in the house with her.  You know in the beginning of the movie that she is going to die (so there are no spoilers here).

If you enjoy Ghost Hunters, etc. you will like this movie.  It actually had a few really good goosebump moments to it.  I really liked it.  The question is, is it based on a semi-true story?  I don't think it is, I think its a lot like the Blair Witch Project (although no shakey cameras to make you sick), but some of the credits make you think it is real because it says that her footage is some of the best paranormal footage ever recorded and that the Masterson house is on the top 10 list of the most haunted homes in America.  I came across a site that people were discussing this issue.  Most people thought it was made up, but a few said it was really based on an actual person that died during an investigation.  Having done a little ghost hunting myself I think it would be easy to die during an investigation because it's completely dark and you can easily fall and break your neck.  But I did some searching for it on the internet and could not find any stories, if there was something where someone died a mysterious death???  It would be in a million news reports.  Anyway, it was a pretty good movie and I recommend it.

    Arang  (2006)

Okay, this is a Great Korean film.  Good plot, great acting, lots of scary moments, good twists.  The woman that plays the lead detective is tough but also vulnerable.  There were a few things that didn't make sense to me at first, but when I went back to watch it again, I knew what was going on.  Anyway, if you like Asian horror movies this has all the creepy elements (long flowing black hair cascading from ceilings, red bloody eyes with a pure white face, lots of suspense) plus a few interesting surprises.  IT was very good and I really recommend it.

  • This really wasn't a remake

    Under discussion:

    Prom Night  (2008)

This really wasn't a remake of the original movie since the story lines and the killers were pretty different.  Prom Night and killing and slashing was the only thing they had in common.  Anyway, it was the usual kind of slasher film but at least in this one there was a motive and a mission to the killing.  I don't know why they didn't go for an R Rating and really pump this movie up, I know they probably wanted more high school kids to go and see it, but I think it could have been a lot bloodier (even though I don't like a lot of gore, I just thought the killings were too clean).  I thought the acting was pretty good, Brittany Snow did a great job.  I probably won't add this to my dvd collection but I didn't think it was a bad movie...

  • Crystal Skulls

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

I've always been fascinated by the crystal skulls that have been found all over the world and really enjoyed watching several documentaries on it - I even think there was an Unsolved Mysteries story about them too.  I can honestly say that I liked the documentaries much better than this movie.  Now, I'm not saying it wasn't a fun movie, I was just disappointed a lot actually.  It had such potential to be better!!! I don't know how, maybe a whole different story, maybe a different ending, maybe a more mystical approach?  But it just wasn't what I was expecting.  I wish Karen Allen and Harrison Ford would have had more airtime together and wish they would have got to bicker more which would have led to an incredible kiss...but it didn't happen that way.  I also thought some of the lines were so corny.  Cate Blanchett looked fabulous with her little black bobbed haircut and of course, her acting is always great no matter what she is in...ALL in ALL, it was a fun movie, just don't think about things and it was okay.

  • This is a "so bad it's good" kind of movie

This movie had a lot of very bad moments.  Of course there is the beautiful woman with the heaving cleavage running around, her twin egyptian corpse who just lays there half naked and a severed hand that crawls around with an enormous (platic looking) ruby ring.  It actually had some great suspense and the acting wasn't bad at all.

    The Reaping  (2007)

As a lot of you know, I'm not the best writer when it comes to writing Reviews, but I just like to say what I feel.

I think the Reaping was a really good movie.  I think it could have been better but I really enjoyed it.  It had a pretty good story and a nice unexpected ending.  I thought Hillary Swank did a great job (of course she usually always does even in her days of Sometimes they come Back Again) she's a great actor.  I probably wouldn't characterize this as a horror movie, more like a mystery, but it had a lot of suspense and a creepy little girl (and scary religious people in a way).  It kept me interested through the movie to see what was going to happen next...

    Face  (2004)

This was a pretty good movie with a nice twist ending.  It's also a bit of a sad love story.  I do have to say that I got the characters mixed up a few times, probably from the translation, so I watched it a second time and it made a lot more sense.  There were a few things that didn't make sense that they just put in for the "scare" factor.  I thought the acting was really good and it is definately worth watching!

    Wedding Slashers  (2006)

This was definately a gorey slasher film.  It really wasn't too bad at all (story wise).  But of course it has the typical stereo type for certain people and it was bloody as all get out.  I still can't believe that Richard Lynch was in it for about the last 15 minutes or so.  Anyway, it was a cute little gorey movie with a few funny moments and a little suspense here and there.

    Slaughter Night  (2006)

The opening scenes of this movie were pretty gorey and brutal but it was a pretty good story.  There were some very creepy and chilling moments in the movie, I completely forgot I was reading subtitles.  If you are not a fan of a LOT of blood and gore then don't rent this movie.

    Ghost Train  (2006)

If you find a train pass on the ground, please leave it alone...this movie had a lot of chills and thrills.  Of course the signature long black hair coming out of the shadows with the pure white face and some very startling scenes.  A cursed train pass makes people turn into zombies to kill.  I thought most of this movie was pretty good - there were some very long sappy scenes at times and the effects were a little cartoonish AND to tell you the truth the ending was confusing.  But I did like the ambiance of the movie and I really liked some of the scenes on the train tracks.

    Wind Chill  (2007)

Watch this movie by a roaring fire or on a very hot day, by the time it was over, I was just freezing.  Whew.  I have to say that at the beginning this movie moved a little slow for me but then things started picking up.  I really like this kind of film - lots of suspense, darkness, mystery…it was extremely creepy.  The characters were very rich and I really started caring about them and hoped they would both come out of this experience alive.  For a while I just couldn’t figure out what was going on and why these “ghosts” were haunting that area and what the connection was with the other characters besides car accidents – but you see what it’s all about by the end.  I really liked it, thought the acting was great, the story was great, the flow was really good too.  It’s a nice film to watch with a big cup of hot chocolate and cuddle up with someone OR a furry little four legged someone.

  • Very Interesting...

    The Tripper  (2007)

The Tripper is definately a SLASHER movie, if you don't like gore, don't watch this.  Even with blood spurting everywhere it was a really cool film.  You can really see David Arquette's playful and crazy side in directing this movie.  It was extremely original, and I'm sure has a lot of political symbolism in it for liberals and conservatives alike.  Also there was a brief full frontal male nudity (something you don't see in hardly any movies) BUT unfortunately it was not Balthazar Getty, it was a skinny, pale hippy guy - BUT it's progress!  So, if you are a slasher fan, I think you may like it, actually, watch it a couple of times and try to figure out a lot of meanings behind some things, it is pretty interesting!

  • Short Stories with a Twist

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]
    Under discussion:

It seems that in the 1970s, there were quite a few horror movies that featured short stories.  This is one of my favorite ones.  The one thing all of these stories have in common is that most all of the customers in an antique store tried to "rob" the owner (Peter Cushing) in one way or another.  I really enjoyed all of the stories and their twist endings.  Just when you think everything will be fine...Ooops, you are wrong!   Good acting, great stories, kept my attention - I think you'll enjoy it.

  • M for Marvelous Peter Lorre

    Under discussion:

    M  (1931)

I've always loved Petter Lorre in just about anything, this is definately no exception.  I actually think this is one of his best performances, showing he can do high drama as well as some of his comedic roles in other movies.  It is about a town that has a serial killer on the lose who kills young children, the police have a crackdown on every aspect of crime and the crime bosses are tired of being constantly harrassed so they decided to find the killer themselves and give him a (actually a pretty fair) trial.  This film also shows the mentality of people when something like this happens, almost like the Salem Witch hunts (every man that even stops to talk to a child gets accused and beatten).  There were times I almost felt sorry for the killer and how he could not control his tendencies, but I still wanted him to be torn apart and hoped he would not be saved...anyway, it's a great movie and really interesting.

  • Sibling Rivalry to the Extreme

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]
    Under discussion:

This is such a creepy disturbing film about two sisters who have extreme jealousy and hatred towards each other (which coincidentally is true about Joan Crawford and Bette Davis – in a documentary about their lives and making this movie together, there is a part where Bette Davis is suppose to “pretend” kick Joan Crawford, well Joan Crawford didn’t want to take any chances and made them put a dummy on the ground in her place, just in case Bette got carried away).  Sometimes I think I still have nightmares of Bette Davis in her white pancake makeup and pigtails and frilly little dress singing, I’m Writing a Letter to Daddy – it just gives you chills at how good Bette plays a demented, insane, elderly child.  One thing I always thought about this movie was that this is what happened between Baby June and Gypsy Rose Lee when they got older – Baby June was the child star and then faded into obscurity when she got older then ran off with a back up dancer after that Gypsy Rose Lee was the star and got all the attention with her strip tease act…maybe this might have been their story. Hmmmmm, makes me wonder.  Anyway, if you haven’t seen this movie (yes it’s in black and white but I promise you will get used to it if you give it a chance) try to watch it and let me know what you think!

    Black Sheep  (2007)

When I first heard about this movie I thought it was going to be a little stupid and cheesey but I have to say that I REALLY enjoyed it.  It was definately a slaughter fest - gore everywhere - sheep everywhere - human sheep everywhere - sheep jokes everywhere; but it was carried out really well.  I loved the banter between Henry and the environmental activist, Experience lots of great lines.  It was a little gross at times but it was worth seeing a movie with killer attack sheep.

    Foul Play  (1978)

This is one of my favorite Comedies of the 1970s.  I still like to watch this every once in a while.  Goldie Hawn is CLASSIC Goldie Hawn - running from the bad men and into the arms of cute Chevy Chase.  This movie has so many interesting characters and also has a great story.  Burgess Meredith is hilarious as her landlord with the pet Boa, Dudley Moore is great as a pervert, Billy Barty is such a riot.  If you haven't seen this movie, it's pretty timeless and I think you will enjoy it...although you do have to put up with lots of Barry Manilow songs...

    Fritz the Cat  (1972)

This movie was actually one of the first X-rated Cartoons (of course now in this day and age, it's pretty tame - once you've seen one cartoon penis, I mean you've seen them all).   It was portrayed as more of an art film and had a lot of political and racial issues of the times.  It is actually a step back to 1972 (although I was just a very little girl at this time, I still remember the clothes and the trends).  The art in this film is pretty cool it's also a lot of fun to hear the jive talk and learn all about Fritz the cool cat who just wants friends and to get high and for everyone to like him.  This is definately different and very interesting.

    Love Actually  (2003)

This has to be one of my favorite Romantic Comedies.  I have a tradition now, along with the 1951 Scrooge movie and It's a Wonderful Life, to watch this film at Christmas time every year.  I just LOVE all the different stories, some make you giggle, some make you get a little teary eyed, some make you sigh because you hope someday that might be you...but it's a GREAT movie with lots of twists and turns and I love how they are all tied together.  I just think it's a great movie about hope and change and happiness and familarity and betrayal.  I would have given it more stars if I could.

    A Dirty Shame  (2004)

If you are not a fan of John Waters movies, do NOT watch this movie.  You have to be a true fan of his works to really get and appreciate this raunchy humor.  I know that somethings were REALLY over the top and had a lot of adolescent jokes and giggles.  Tracy Ullman's performance is as always hilarious and I think Selma Blair shows a lot of her comedic side.  Of course Johnny Knoxville is his same old jack-ass sexual deviant self, but all in all it had some fun, dirty humor that really says DON'T TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY, JUST HAVE FUN.  So every time I see a "holier-than-thou" person talking about how wrong sex is or sex education or the EVILS of adultery...I just know in a few months they will be on the news - caught at a sex party with animals or something like that...

I was really surprised that this film didn't get more attention.  Another one of my favorite Mockumentaries, there is just laugh after laugh, even after I've seen it 4 or 5 times (and I always seem to find something different that I've missed).  One of my favorite and most tacky scenes is when Becky Leeman (Denise Richards) does her part in the talent show - I think I just put my hands over my eyes and shook my head in disbelief.  So funny.   Definately worth seeing!!!

    Best in Show  (2000)

This is one of my all-time favorite movies!  The characters are all interesting and fun and when I heard that most of it is improvised, I was really impressed.   When I worked at my last job, my co-worker was also a fan of this movie and we would (at least once a day) quote something from this film, especially if we were having a stressful day, it always made us crack up.  I think I love just about everything Christopher Guest has created.  He is definately a comic genious and is surrounded by the same!

  • La La La

I have to agree with everyone who has written reviews about this movie that the Cinematography is beautiful.  All the colors are just etched in your brain along with that same tune that is played over and over and over.  I had to put it on mute for a while and just read the subtitles, that seemed to bring the charm of the movie back for me.  Catherine Deneuve is so young and beautiful this has to be one of her first films.  It's actually a great movie to just sit back, relax, enjoy the story and appreciate the art of this 1960s Masterpiece.

  • Cheesy but fun

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]
    Under discussion:

Okay, the acting is bad, the story is kind of silly, the editing is kind of atrocious and the effects are pretty laughable.  But it's still pretty fun to watch.  One of my favorite parts, which is pretty funny, is watching the men walk through the swamp.  You can tell it is a screen that they are walking against trying to make us think they are quietly walking through the murky water and ducking low hanging branches.  Dean Jagger shouldn't have played the lead role, he was too soft and sweet, they needed someone who was a little more hard nosed that was likable at first and then became a horrible power hungry tyrant.  But all you got was a sweet dopey guy that was hurt by the woman he loved.  I wonder if this movie would have been better with another lead actor and better direction.  But who knows.  It's a pretty fun old movie that has a some character to it.  Not a total waste of time.

  • One of my favorite Silent Movies

    Under discussion:

I have to say this is one of my favorite silent movies.  I always thought that it was probably one of the first "art" films ever made.  Even though it's a silent movie, it just speaks volumes.  It's a great story with a great twist.  It's extremely creepy and has a great atmosphere to it.  I loved all the sharp angles of the houses, streets and windows and landscapes letting you know that something isn't right with this world.  Of course the faces are all pure white and the eyes are lined in dark black giving it the feeling of death.  If you have never seen a silent movie before, I think this would be a great one to start with, it's engaging and keeps you interested throughout the hour long film.

  • Such a great movie!

I really wasn't sure I wanted to see this movie for some reason but I'm sooooo glad I did.  It made me laugh and it made me cry (which I can tell you that I hardly ever cry at movies). May-Ho loses her husband in a diving accident (she had only known him for seven days) and comes to inherit his vast fortune (which she really didn't believe he had).  She has to deal with his mother and his ex-girlfriend and makes herself look like a selfish, trashy gold digger.  Then one night in a drunken stupor she has a pretty bad car accident, after that, using her left eye, she can see ghosts and befriends an old classmate of hers called Ken who died in a drowning accident.  After that her life begins to change for the better.  Anyway, I would definately recommend this movie to anyone who wants to watch a very sweet, funny and touching movie.

    No Reservations  (2007)

This was a nice, sad, kind of sweet little film.  It, of course, follows the same predictable pathway as a lot of romantic sad movies, you know - there is hate at first, then tolerance, then love with Aaron Eckhart and when she adopts her niece (Abigail Breslin - who did an excellent job) - there is screwing up, learning a lesson, etc.  If I remember right the trailer for this movie kind of made it sound more like a comedy than a drama, so if you are looking for a movie that will cheer you up, don't get this movie because it can be a little depressing - but - if you are looking for a nice (almost tear jerker in a few spots) movie about loosening up and changing your life for the better, this is a pretty good film.

    Hatchet  (2007)

I know I've already written something about this movie in the Horror Movies 101 group, but I thought I'd write a little more about it.  Although it was the typical slasher movie and got really disgusting and horribly bloody at times, there were also some really funny times in this movie.  I REALLY liked Deon Richmond, he had also played the token black guy in Not another Teen Movie (which was pretty cute) and he was hilarious in that so he really brought a few really good laughs as well as the Cajun Asian guy (Parry Shen) who takes them on the "Haunted Swamp Tour" he was really funny.  All in all it was a typical slasher film, you know they shoot him or impale him and he just keeps coming back over and over.  It always amazes me too that the stupid idiot tourists think that he is dead each time they kill him.  Won't they ever learn?  Also had a few short appearnces by Robert Englund and Tony Todd (Candyman).  I think it was definately worth a watch!

I really liked this movie.  Sometimes it would move a tad bit slow but it was one of the best movies about Beowulf and Grendel that I have ever seen.  They really stuck to it being very realistic for the times.  I think Gerard Butler does an EXCELLENT job playing Beowulf.  I love the scenary - it is so visually stunning to see Iceland - the cinematography is excellent.  I love the humanity of this film - especially with the troll - even with the brutality there is still a little mercy.  It's a great movie to just sit back, relax and let the story unfold in front of your eyes.  I definately reccommend it!

Okay, if you're a Jack Black fan, you will love this movie.  Just don't take it seriously and sit back and enjoy the stupidity.  There were actually a few parts that really cracked me up and then there were other parts where I just shook my head and thought, why am I watching this???  But I have to admit it, I love Jack Black and his craziness and his love for music.  I really did like the first part where he met his partner, that was very cute.  I also liked the makeup for the Devil, very cool and fun.  So, don't watch this movie if you're expecting some hilarious - just let that giggly little 10 or 12 year old come out and enjoy Jack Black in all his Glory!!!

This movie was very artsy, very interesting and very uncomfortable at times.  One thing that really started getting on my nerves was that little boy soprano, whew, that was a little intense.  BUT the story was great although very sad, it held your attention even when it was a bit slow at times.  The one thing I really loved about this movie was how visual it was.  It's just a beautiful, hopeful, heartwrenching, bizarre, tragic, mind blowing movie.  This is a film to watch when you aren't feeling really depressed or really hungry and especially if you have a sick stomach...

    Horror Hotel  (1960)

I think I like just about every Christopher Lee movie.  There is something about his presence, his voice...

This was a nice little spooky film.  I love the darkness, the "fog", the strange people who just stand there and stare, the cold gaze of Elizabeth Selwyn, the blind - slightly insane minister, the Nancy Drew type college student that didn't let anything scare her, then there's her immature boyfriend and her scientific brother.  All these elements thrown together makes a pretty good low budget movie.  I also like the fact that the director draws you into the story to let you know there is something wrong and you want to warn the unsuspecting college student or help the poor little mute housekeeper.

Anyway, it's a nice movie to watch on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

    Horror Express  (1972)

I remember seeing this one night when I was young on Friday Fright Night in Kansas City, Missouri.  As I watched it again it just made me laugh.  It was very amusing and the story line was really bad, but it was very fun to watch and it brought back memories of me staying up until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning, eating bad junk food, drinking real Coke (god I haven't had a real Coke in ages...ahhh) and getting spooked out by the demonic monkey man with the glowing red eyes.  Also anything wtih Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing has got my attention from the get go, they are right up there with Vincent Price and Peter Lorrie in my book so I just LOVE them.

Anyway, it might be a little corny for some of you but I love those semi-bad horror movies from the 70s!!!!
