Re:Why do we like horror movies ...
By divinemsjunebug in HORROR MOVIES 101
"I have really been thinking about why I love horror movies so much. I know it started when I was around 4 or 5 years old and I used to LOVE all the Godzilla and Giant Robot movies, then there was Scooby Doo, then it graduated to the Christopher Lee Dracula movies, then Friday Fright night. So it’s always been a part of my life. There are so many things that I have been afraid of in my life and some pretty horrible stuff happened to me when I was a little child. For some strange reason, scary movies might have been a way for me to face my fears SAFELY and know that while watching this and surviving this movie, I had overcome something. OR it’s like others have said, since I hate flying, roller coasters and anything physically “scary” this is the only way I get my adrenaline rush (except when I am singing on stage, that can give you a major adrenaline rush – especially if you know you haven’t practiced enough on your songs…eeek, but it& ... "This was definately a gorey slasher film. It really wasn't too bad at all (story wise). But of course it has the typical stereo type for certain people and it was bloody as all get out. I still can't believe that Richard Lynch was in it for about the last 15 minutes or so. Anyway, it was a cute little gorey movie with a few funny moments and a little suspense here and there. "I am also a Blair Witch Fan, it had a lot of great goosebump moments. I loved the part when the first guy went missing and you hear him calling for them in the distance, or the tent rustling. I do wish they would have shown a shadow darting off or something a little more. Cloverfield was definately a horror movie to me. Lots of suspense, blindly running and not knowing what's in front of you, monsters, etc. " [More]

Ask the Doctor...
By divinemsjunebug in HORROR MOVIES 101
"Sorry Doc I thought I would jump in on this one. There is a mediocre movie out called Stay Alive (it's also based on a video game) which is based on a curse by Elizabeth Bathory. It's a fun, mindless movie and the effects are a little off, but I like it (which doesn't mean a lot because I like just about every horror movie). I am going to have to read The Historian, it sounds really interesting. There is also another movie coming out in 2009 with William Hurt in it called The Countess - it's suppose to be a bit of a macabre love story. " [More]

"I just saw Red Zone Cuba - that was one of my favorites. I just don't know. I was really upset when Joel was replaced but then Mike won me over. So it's a toss up. I think Mike has a better sense of humor...hmmm " [More]

"The opening scenes of this movie were pretty gorey and brutal but it was a pretty good story. There were some very creepy and chilling moments in the movie, I completely forgot I was reading subtitles. If you are not a fan of a LOT of blood and gore then don't rent this movie. " [More]
Train pass from hell

"If you find a train pass on the ground, please leave it alone...this movie had a lot of chills and thrills. Of course the signature long black hair coming out of the shadows with the pure white face and some very startling scenes. A cursed train pass makes people turn into zombies to kill. I thought most of this movie was pretty good - there were some very long sappy scenes at times and the effects were a little cartoonish AND to tell you the truth the ending was confusing. But I did like the ambiance of the movie and I really liked some of the scenes on the train tracks. " [More]

Re:The Invisible Man

"The Hunchback of Notredame is one of my favorites too BUT it's so sad, I just can't watch it too much (and I agree with you about the silent version, it just doesn't stack up to the 1930s version). Doc, what is the ending in the book? I know, I know, I should read it but I don't think I can bring myself to read the story because it just breaks my heart (and I have enough things in my life to do that right now). I agree with Rizzo, if it's in the daylight and I can't see someone that is trying to kill me, I think that would scare me more than Frankenstein (of course Dracula in the day light would be much, much better because he would be a pile of ash...hee hee). And I think what made the invisible man more scary is that he started to go crazy and was not a rationale man anymore (of course not as crazy as Hollow Man). Insane people scare me more than monsters - Hannibal Lecter would fall under that category too. " [More]

"Watch this movie by a roaring fire or on a very hot day, by the time it was over, I was just freezing. Whew. I have to say that at the beginning this movie moved a little slow for me but then things started picking up. I really like this kind of film - lots of suspense, darkness, mystery…it was extremely creepy. The characters were very rich and I really started caring about them and hoped they would both come out of this experience alive. For a while I just couldn’t figure out what was going on and why these “ghosts” were haunting that area and what the connection was with the other characters besides car accidents – but you see what it’s all about by the end. I really liked it, thought the acting was great, the story was great, the flow was really good too. It’s a nice film to watch with a big cup of hot chocolate and cuddle up with someone OR a furry little four legged someone. " [More]
Very Interesting...

"The Tripper is definately a SLASHER movie, if you don't like gore, don't watch this. Even with blood spurting everywhere it was a really cool film. You can really see David Arquette's playful and crazy side in directing this movie. It was extremely original, and I'm sure has a lot of political symbolism in it for liberals and conservatives alike. Also there was a brief full frontal male nudity (something you don't see in hardly any movies) BUT unfortunately it was not Balthazar Getty, it was a skinny, pale hippy guy - BUT it's progress! So, if you are a slasher fan, I think you may like it, actually, watch it a couple of times and try to figure out a lot of meanings behind some things, it is pretty interesting! " [More]
Short Stories with a Twist

"It seems that in the 1970s, there were quite a few horror movies that featured short stories. This is one of my favorite ones. The one thing all of these stories have in common is that most all of the customers in an antique store tried to "rob" the owner (Peter Cushing) in one way or another. I really enjoyed all of the stories and their twist endings. Just when you think everything will be fine...Ooops, you are wrong! Good acting, great stories, kept my attention - I think you'll enjoy it. " [More]

M for Marvelous Peter Lorre

"I've always loved Petter Lorre in just about anything, this is definately no exception. I actually think this is one of his best performances, showing he can do high drama as well as some of his comedic roles in other movies. It is about a town that has a serial killer on the lose who kills young children, the police have a crackdown on every aspect of crime and the crime bosses are tired of being constantly harrassed so they decided to find the killer themselves and give him a (actually a pretty fair) trial. This film also shows the mentality of people when something like this happens, almost like the Salem Witch hunts (every man that even stops to talk to a child gets accused and beatten). There were times I almost felt sorry for the killer and how he could not control his tendencies, but I still wanted him to be torn apart and hoped he would not be saved...anyway, it's a great movie and really interesting.
