"Hey, stranger. How's tricks? Here's a brief overview of life on earth, in 5 or so languages: 5. Akira Kurosawa's Dreams: An overview of human foibles and achievements, presented with unflinching sympathy and penetrating understanding. 4. The Maltese Falcon: Honor and integrity and everything (drugs, money, sex, etc.) combatting it in a fast-paced, but tightly focused character study. Has the double virtue of leaving Casablanca to be seen at some other point down the road. 3. Jules & Jim: Love and Romance, and the importance of knowing the difference. How life feels to the young, and how decisions can be made without regard for consequences, based on intuition, principle, and ambiguity. 2. "Hi Matty,I hate Contact, and could rant for 20 minutes without stopping to breathe about how atrocious it is. What films provoke this kind of vituperative response from you?Have you seen the Mystery of Picasso? Can you name two books you'd like to see put on the screen? (I'd pick War with the Newts by Karel Capek and Closing Time by Joseph Heller. And really, Alan Arkin would shine like crazy in that role.)Kon bien te ke amaneskas. " [More]

"#1 - Rumble Fish. This astonishingly beautiful film was so far ahead of its time critics tarred, feathered, and ran it out of town. It is, however, an achingly emotional story about the effects of time, distance, growth, and alienation. It's a love-it-or-hate-it film, and many will be put off by it, but those who can appreciate it will almost certainly adore it. It may be Coppola's best. #2 River's Edge - in keeping with the 1980s, this portrayal of sibling rivalry and suburban alienation in a lower-middle-class home reveals more about the time it was made than any other movie of 1987. It is Keanu's best performance, and although much of the film is terribly cheesy and hammy, heavy-handed and predictable, it retains a nostalgic charm and a surprising relevancy today. Both #1 and #2 feature Dennis Hopper very prominently. This is coincidence. Both were made shortly after his dedication to sobriety. this is probably not coincidence.#3 City of Lost Children. One & ... " [More]
