I think a lot of the credit has to go to John Cusack. After seeing the film twice I can't imagine another actor in the role. besides the scares and misdirections the film really shines during the main Samuel Jackson sequence. His preformance in this, and Black Snake Moan (in sections) has to be the the most intimidating I've seen him since Pulp Fiction.
