another knock-off?
Logan's Run
i watched Ewan McGregor in "The Island" a few days ago and I kept having thoughts of how it was basically a remake of Logan's Run. so I had to break out the classics. I forgot how much i really enjoyed this movie. Peter York was a perfect fit for the role. The special effects were pretty low-budget; everytime they would shoot at the runner it always made a spark at their feet. i guess in the future nobody is taught how to aim. it reminded me of the old bugs bunny cartoons where yosemite would shoot at the feet and yell "dance ya varmint". Aside from that, I loved the theme of the movie. who can forget the creepy "renewal ceremony" masks?

Re: another knock-off?
No way man, these two films don't compare at all. Unless you mean the "the world is not what it seems" theme (in which case you'd have to lump in The Truman Show, The Thirteenth Floor , and The Matrix - not all "the same").
Logan's run was a better movie, but not the same. Now if you wanted to say The Island ripped off THX 1138 I might accept that.

Re: another knock-off?
they totally compare:
logans run - your optimal "departure" experience was a mystical renewal island - your optimal "departure" was mystical trip to this "outside" island existance.
logans run - peter york comes to realize that something is wrong and runs. island - ewan mcg. comes to realize that something is wrong and runs.
logans run - nobody knows how to aim. island - gun shooting? what? hit what?
both movies push an identical utopian ideal.
and i agree...logan was a better movie. and i do agree with the similarity with thx. another classic.

Re: another knock-off?
A few plot similarities does not a “sameness” make. Logan’s run was about post-apocalyptic underground society that had implemented its own mythology and rituals in order to survive. The Island is about genetic engineering and cloning and the deception of the occupants in order to keep them in line (more like The Matrix in this regard). The Island was about “big business” where Logan’s Run was about “big ideas” and perhaps government.
Maybe the comparison between the two troubles me most because I really like one of the movies and really don’t like the other one.

Re: another knock-off?
the island was an assumed "post apocalyptic" setting. people couldnt go out of the complex for fear of being contaminated.

Actually The Island is basically a complete remake of Parts: The Clonus Horror. Check it out. You'll see why the makers of Parts sued. The breeding of clones for body parts in an isolated environment where everyone wants to go to "America". Low budget and reeks of the 70s but actually quite effective.
As for Logan's Run...always been a guilty pleasure of mine ever since I saw it in the theater when I was seven and was blown away by the fact that I got to see boobs in a PG flick (during the Love Shop sequence). Quite educational in that sense!

Logan's Run is a pleasure for me as well! Although I rarely feel guilty for liking the movies I do. Jenny Agutter is just really attractive here. I was surprised when I looked her up and realized she was the same girl from Walkabout.
I guess there has been a new adaptation of Logan's Run in the works for a while now, but I'm not sure if it's going anywhere.
Anyone see the TV series or read the original book? I'm curious.
