What IS Sci-Fi?

The question is obvious, but the answer is not readily available to my mind. How do I define Sci-Fi? I want to get your ideas. Answer the question "What is Sci-Fi?" in your own words, and feel free to use films to help illustrate your point. :)

I have an answer for this but it must wait until I have time to type! ...

Science Fiction is a branch of Horror films.   Much like the Italian "Amazon Cannibal" flicks that could be labeled as "Action/Adventure".

Sci-Fi films deal with scientific fact or theory and generally (but not always!) take place in the future.   Basically Sci-Fi is any film that deals with science or technology and takes it to extremes.   Frankenstien  is a Sci-Fi film just like  Alien  is also a Horror film.   Every Sci-Fi flick has some horrific elements that also make it a Horror film.   Even  ET  falls into this category!

Funny you should bring that up because here is an interesting list that I found...   Best Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - Inside Movies Blog .   I don't agree with this list and I feel that they left out some important movies (The Time Machine, Altered States, Star Trek: The Motion Picture )  it is entertaining none the less.

Sci-fi is anything that takes normalcy and puts a scientic twist on it.

A fascinating suggestion GOR, yet I feel there are some sci-fi movies that I would necessarily classify as horror. For instance I don't think of Contact as horror because there were no parts in their that were specifically designed to make me jump out of my seat (that I can remember). I consider this to be a necessary element in a film in order to refer to it as having elements of a horror film. I think suspense/thriller might be a more accurate term. Moments of suspense and thrill are in many movies though - drama, comedy, sci-fi, horror, etc. Yet a suspenseful moment isn't necessarily meant to horrify, it can lead to a horrifying scene, but it can also lead to other things, such as relief or whathaveyou.

Therefore, I am going to disagree on your point concerning sci-fi being a brand of horror until you can prove my own thinking to be incorrect. :)

I do, however, agree with your view of sci-fi dealing with science, technology, and often futuristic/unknown elements. Usually alien species fall into this because extraterrestials are considered to fall under the domain of scientific enquiry.

Yet many things fall under the domain of scientific enquiry, indeed all things that we are able to subject to the scientific method could be said to fall under the realm of science. This makes science fiction fairly broad in my opinion because much of the world around us is defined by what science says about it, and all you need for science fiction is a little fiction to go with the science. :)

What do you all think?

Re:What IS Sci-Fi?

Here are some definitions from dictionary.com to chew on:

a form of fiction that draws imaginatively on scientific knowledge and speculation in its plot, setting, theme, etc.

A literary or cinematic genre in which fantasy, typically based on speculative scientific discoveries or developments, environmental changes, space travel, or life on other planets, forms part of the plot or background.

literary fantasy involving the imagined impact of science on society

Works of fiction that use scientific discoveries or advanced technology — either actual or imaginary — as part of their plot. Jules Verne and H. G. Wells were early writers of science fiction. More recent ones are Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury.

And here are some statements from wikipedia:

Science fiction (abbreviated SF or sci-fi with varying punctuation and capitalization) is a broad genre of fiction that often involves speculations based on current or future science or technology.

Science fiction differs from fantasy in that, within the context of the story, its imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically established or scientifically postulated laws of nature (though some elements in a story might still be pure imaginative speculation). Exploring the consequences of such differences is the traditional purpose of science fiction, making it a "literature of ideas".[2] Science fiction is largely based on writing entertainingly and rationally about alternate possibilities[3] in settings that are contrary to known reality.

Science fiction is difficult to define, as it includes a wide range of subgenres and themes. Author and editor Damon Knight summed up the difficulty by stating that "science fiction is what we point to when we say it",[7] a definition echoed by author Mark C. Glassy, who argues that the definition of science fiction is like the definition of pornography: you don't know what it is, but you know it when you see it.[8] Vladimir Nabokov argued that if we were rigorous with our definitions, Shakespeare's play The Tempest would have to be termed science fiction.[9]

According to science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein, "a handy short definition of almost all science fiction might read: realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method."[10] Rod Serling's definition is "fantasy is the impossible made probable. Science Fiction is the improbable made possible."[11] Lester Del Rey wrote, "Even the devoted aficionado– or fan- has a hard time trying to explain what science fiction is", and that the reason for there not being a "full satisfactory definition" is that "there are no easily delineated limits to science fiction."[12]

Forrest J. Ackerman publicly used the term "sci-fi" at UCLA in 1954,[13] though Robert A. Heinlein had used it in private correspondence six years earlier.[14] As science fiction entered popular culture, writers and fans active in the field came to associate the term with low-budget, low-tech "B-movies" and with low-quality pulp science fiction.[15][16][17] By the 1970s, critics within the field such as Terry Carr and Damon Knight were using "sci-fi" to distinguish hack-work from serious science fiction,[18] and around 1978, Susan Wood and others introduced the pronunciation "skiffy." Peter Nicholls writes that "SF" (or "sf") is "the preferred abbreviation within the community of sf writers and readers."[19] David Langford's monthly fanzine Ansible includes a regular section "As Others See Us" which offers numerous examples of "sci-fi" being used in a pejorative sense by people outside the genre.[20]

Re:What IS Sci-Fi?

Thanks for the mash-up of definitions and history of SF. I never knew that Sci-Fi became a term referring to B-films with "pulp science fiction", Or in a pejorative sense by people who don't like science fiction. :) That's amusing.

Well now that we've established what science fiction is perhaps we can do something constructive with our newfound knowledge.
