missing a film

Italian movie

I saw this movie about 17 years ago. I think it was Italian. It had two words in the title and the first word was similar to the second word, but I can't remember either.

It was about a young man who was in the circus . . . I think. I can't even remember the storyline exactly. He was either split personality or transgendered or something. Good grief. And maybe a serial killer?

This is driving me nuts because I can't remember the name of this movie.

The only movie I can think of that is both Italian and has to do with a circus is La Strada.  It starred Anthony Quinn, Richard Basehart and Giulietta Masina.  The circus part comes in when they spend the winter with a small circus.  The character of Anthony Quinn has a confrontation with Richard Basehart and then a second one with the character of Richard Basehart being killed.

This might or might not be the movie you are thinking of....hope this helps.
