Tonight is the first night of my knitting club.
I've had a film club and tonight I'll start a knitting club. I'd like
to combine the two down the road. Are there any suggestions on how that
may work?
Any good movies to watch while knitting?
I watched Cinderella Man the other night while working on a hat. The end was so suspenseful my palms soaked the wool I was working with.

So in response to myself, yeah, last night went well.
In an unusual turn of events, I brought Logan's Run at the last minute, but I wound up getting hooked on Lost.

Re: Tonight is the first night of my knitting club.
I would really like to learn how to knit, will there be a club for people who do not know how to knit?
Lost was really good last night...I don't blame you for getting caught up in it.

Re: Tonight is the first night of my knitting club.
Oh congrats. My knitting club meets on Wednesday nights too, but in a bar over martinis. In a livingroom with a movie might be better for the knitting.
I'm thinking there are movies good for knitting and knitting good for movies.
For instance, I wouldn't do a lot of complicated increases or decreases or cabling and try to watch a movie. But the long stretch of a repetitive-stitich scarf or socks? That makes good movie and meeting knitting.
Colorwork isn't bad if the pattern is small and repetitive, but not so great for intarsia, I don't think.
Movies that are a lot about the conversation/dialogue, where you aren't likely to miss an important visual clue or a super telling gesture are good. A lot of documentaries are good.
Hmm.... Vodka with your yarn might make you miss Lost. Thank god for iTunes.

Re: Tonight is the first night of my knitting club.
Examples of an excellent knitting flick:
Anything directed by Brett Ratner.
Bad knitting flick:
Documentary of Andrew Goldsworthy (Rivers and Tides). It's way too visually compelling.
Conclusion: Inadvertently, the exploration into flicks to watch while
knitting is really an exploration into directors who keep a safe
distance from pushing the envelope.

Re: Tonight is the first night of my knitting club.
Yes, that's so, but I still find, when watching, say, Lady and the Tramp, that knitting to that is hard. You miss too much.
Maybe it's better to knit to novels on tape?
Definitely knitting tonight while watching the Oscars in my jammies with a few good friends. Any predictions?
Anybody in this lineup a known knitter?
Judi Dench and Gromit, for sure are knitters. And she's got a lot of Oscars to knit small sweaters for, doesn't she? Think Frances McDormand knits? Paul Giamatti strikes me as a potential knitter.
I'd like to knit for William Hurt... or David Strathairn. Starting with socks, and working my way up...

I do not know how to knit. It is on my list of things to do. How do you suggest I begin? Are there any particular books and/or patterns that you suggest for a beginner?

Re: Tonight is the first night of my knitting club.
I suggest that you start with a wash cloth. A wash cloth only takes about an hour or two depending on how fast you knit, and its something you can use and it doesn't have to look pretty. Here is a pattern that I use:

You will also need some basic knitting instruction like these:

And then the best thing to do would be to come to knitting group - we meet at River City Books on Monroe Center Rd. every other Wednesday to knit and maybe talk about movies - the next meeting is 8/23/06.

I think you will love to knit. I just learned a few months a go and have made several scarves and am currently working on a baby blanket!
