suggestions?

So, I'm always on the search for some lovely interesting movies... and the mainstream ones just never get my attention.

Any suggestions of something that might hold my interest?

thanks

Re: suggestions?

this is bound to be a long board topic. here's my two cents:

just about anything by David Gordon Green.  He is a great young director with two excellent films under his belt, one good film, and one that is circling festivals now.  I would personally recommend All The Real Girls, then George Washington.

I would then recommend some of Terrence Malick's films even though they are not really indie.  Especially The New World.  This film absolutely blew me away and anybody who likes art film is bound to love.  But Malick is the greatest ever, so anything in his catalogue. (don't pay attention to the reviews of the New World, people just don't have attention spans for slow moving films anymore).

To get more obscure than that, Jim Jarmusch has a couple decent films, my favorite being Stranger than Paradise.  Very funny film.  A similar type of film would be  Vincent Gallo's Buffalo '66, which is one of my favorite indie comedies.

Getting very obscure yet accessible would be Gerry by Gus Van Sant (My own private idaho and goodwill hunting).

Those are some of my favorite "indie's" that I would personally recommend.  There are plenty I would NOT recommend until I knew more about what the persona liked.

FilmCouch podcast #24 discusses "mumblecore," which is an indie genre by, for, and about 20-somethings (but to be enjoyed by viewers of all ages). Some of the movies discussed are listed at http://www.spout.com/forums/11173/ShowPost.aspx. For confusion, I recommend Primer (2004). Best indie movie I've seen in the past 12 months: Nine Lives (2005).

"All the Real Girls"  is a wonderful movie that  I don't hear recommended enough - so a great suggestion by tmoney. Teenage romance in a small town in North Carolina, by a director named David Gordon Green. He did another one I liked called "George Washington." And then one that's more thriller called "Undertow."
