Can I get any takers for Godfather III?
There are films that are bad on face, and we can serve those up all
day. But how about a film that's deleterious of other great films
bearing the same name? Part III was a great epic tragedy in
filmmaking. My friends and those I trusted told me not to
see it, but I did anyway. I guess I can laugh about it now... but it's
still hard to get over.

Re: Can I get any takers for Godfather III?
I had a lot of trouble trying to sit down and watch the Godfather series. Even after Netflix sent me the Godfather, I knew that it was supposed to be good, but for months, I couldn't get past the psychological barrier to put that disc in and actually watch it. After ducking the movie for months I finally took the time to watch all three and I'm glad that I did. While undoubtably the first movie was the strongest in the series, I think that the Godfather III has gotten a bum rap because it always been compared to perfection instead of being compared on it's own merits. While the film wasn't as powerful, it was still an excellent story and provided some resolution to the Godfather saga. It could have been better, but I'm going to vote Not Guilty of being a Hollywood lackluster.

Re: Can I get any takers for Godfather III?
I think we're probing a deeper issue here. There's been rumor the Godfather Part III was made because Coppola's vineyard was is in debt. I realize it's unsubstantiated, but I think it's safe to say any studio would jump on making Godfather Part III, but would pass on The Conversation Part II. So it can be argued the film was attached to a lineage of great American cinema for the same reasons Jaws 3 was released in 3-D. To milk money from a sure thing.
There's some depth to part III, I'll admit. But Ben raises a good point. There should be a line drawn when you're dealing with a national treasure like The Godfather.
Personally, I absolve Sophia Coppola in this film and I don't want to hear anybody say anything about her. Al Pacino, on the other hand, what happened? It was like he was playing Michael Corleone Scent of a Woman style. I was really shocked how Al Pacino seemed to abandon the Michael Corleone character. It was like watching a soap opera when one day a totally different person shows up playing a character that's been around for years.
Part III shouldn't be thrown in jail. However, on principal alone it should be deemed a lackluster.
