Weekly Theme for May 18: Headin' Down South

I just watched Out of the Past the other night and I decided to do this week's theme on that good old fashion American past time: Going to Mexico.

I actually really liked Gore Verbinski's The Mexican in spite of Julia Roberts.... Tony Soprano as a gay hit man very good.

Touch of Evil is another great film noir that bounces back and forth across the border. This is probably my favorite Orsen Welles film.

Mexico's been on my mind lately. The lovely wife and I are going to be celebrating our 10th anniversary later this year and we're planning a trip to Puerto Vallarta. I've heard that town was basically discovered by American tourists as a result of John Huston filming Night of the Iquana there.

Well there you go. Another week another theme. Have at it.

I remember how paranoid Traffic made me about driving down to Mexico. Don't do anything stupid, don't trust anyone, and always keep at least a hundred bucks in your shoe to pay off anyone. Little did I know that it was all booze and great food.

Losin't It is a great film with Shelley Long, Tom Cruise and Jackie Earle Haley about a group of guys going down to Mexico to lose their virginity and see a donkey show.

Y Tu Mama Tambien was a beautifully filmed road trip through the unseen (to most Americans) parts of Mexico.

Apocalypto was an incredible period film. Mel Gibson might be crazy but he sure makes a great movie.

The Ruins was just blah. College kids falling prey to ancient curse which ruins their debaucherous vacation.

Man on Fire was an alright little flick that once again reassured paranoid Americans that yes, if you go to Mexico you will be kidnapped and lose at least one finger . . . or ear.

A few more US Natives making stints across the border:

No Country for Old Men

In Cold Blood

From Dusk Till Dawn

Pure Luck

And also, check out the very beginning of the pilot episode of Walker, Texas Ranger.  He walks into Mexico where he has no juristiction to beat the crap out of some robbers at a bar, tie them up, and bring them back to Texas.

I liked Johnny Depp's CIA agent in Once Upon a Time in Mexico...although the movie was cheesy as hell.
