Weekly Theme for March 16: Sidekicks

Call them what you will: hero support, tag-a-longs, sniveling assistants; sidekicks are an essential archetype throughout the literary and filmic representations of heroes over the course of our history. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, Inspector Gadget and Penny, Batman and Robin, sidekicks come in all shapes and sizes.

The little blue fish that wouldn't shut up, Cory from Finding Nemo definitely ranks rather high on my list of sidekicks. Straddling the line between ultra-lovable and incredibly annoying, Cory helped catapult Finding Nemo onto countless top ten lists the year it was released.

If there is one thing that made Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull not work for me was the replacement of the incredible Short Round from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom with the whiny wannabe Mutt. With his constant thieving, lightning fast comebacks and general flare for equaling Indiana Jones screen presence, Short Round deserves a top spot on my list.

And lastly Mini-Me. Oh, Mini-Me, so adorable yet so menacing. With his obscene gestures and ability to say so much without saying anything at all, Mini-Me from Austin Powers is truly an indelible sidekick that will not be soon forgotten.

So this week, let's give it up for the sidekicks!

I definitely love Short Round. He's definite at the top of my sidekick list.

Cory from Finding Nemo is at the top of my list of people/personalities I would like to see die a very painful and agonizing death while a sip a beer and chuckle in amusement.

Another great sidekick is Bender, although some might argue he was the main character of Futurama. To me Bender is a hero among sidekicks. He was more enigmatic, magnanimous, hilarious, and vulgar than that other guy whose name I can't remember, but who was supposedly the main character of the show.

As far as your token sidekick goes I'd have to vote for the Tick's sidekick, Arthur. His unassuming name and style was a perfect juxtaposition to the Tick's outrageous antics. The fact that he had no superhero name (from what I and SkyPilot can recall) is further evidence of his conservative sidekick attitude.

A vote here for Clyde, Clint's sidekick in Every Which Way But Loose and Any Which Way You Can.

I'll mention Dian Bachar's character, the sidekick to Trey Parker's and Matt Stone's characters in Orgazmo and BASEketball.  See him as porn superhero sidekick Choda-Boy or pro-sports player Squeak aka Little Bitch.
