Weekly Theme for October 27: I Put A Spell On You!

With Halloween only a few days away - old people getting their stores of pennies ready to unload on ungrateful tweens inappropriately underdressed as Britney Spears to the benefit of the local pedophiles - this week's theme is devoted to that staple of Halloween lore: the witch.

Nowadays, the traditionally ugly wench with pointy hat and warted nose of The WIzard of Oz has been replaced by a flawless, Playboy centerfold body scantily clad in skintight black spandex and perfectly coifed mane of blonde hair with skanky purple highlights like Nicole Kidman in Practical Magic. While the oft forgotten male equivalent, the Warlock, with his itchy black robe and peculiar soul patch has been abandoned for anachronistically attired Abercrombie models with a good sprinkling of Brad Pitt in Interview With The Vampire like those in The Covenant.

Ranging from the family-friendly features like Hocus Pocus and Snow White to the vomit-inducing The Blair Witch Project and Suspiria, witches and warlocks weave their spells throughout the cinematic world to the dismay of easily duped virgins just waiting to be sacrificed.

So put down that over-sized bag of miniature Snickers and get started on this week's theme!

I hope no Wiccans are offended by this conversation.  After all, witch has become somewhat of an un-PC term nowadays in terms of embracing religions.  Be that as it may, in the spirit of the colloquial holiday, a few "witchy" movies that spring to mind that you didn't mention (helped along by the ridiculous number of Halloween marathons on this weekend, the killer flu of 2008, and my penchant for stating the obvious):

The Craft

That Scottish film features three

Teen Witch (awful movie from the 80s)

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (many versions) has a white one.

any Harry Potter calls a girl wizard a witch

Sleeping Beauty features the best Disney villain ever, Maleficent

And, of course, in TV world there's always Charmed and Sabrina, the Teenaged Witch.

Oh, and I forgot the obvious from TV and film: Bewitched!

One I've got to mention is  Häxan. It's a 1922 silent Danish film about the history of witchcraft. I friggin' loved it. It starts out like a documentary then moves along with these long re-enactments of witchy rituals and demon orgies. It's a classic.

If she weighs the same as a duck, she's made of wood, and therefore A WITCH!

Risselada:

That was a great moment from a GREAT movie, Rizzo!   (She turned me into a newt! ...   I got better...) ...

I would recomend  Little Witches (Lots of great nudity in this one) ,  Sorceress   starring the most beautiful woman in the world, Linda Blair and   Elvira, Mistress of the Dark  starring the other most beautiful woman in the world...

Risselada:

this one may count for two - after all, there is also Tim the Sorcerer (what an eccentric performance!). :-)

Almost forgot about The Witches. Another Roald Dahl adaptation that may or may not have been meant for kids.

Then, there's always The Witches of Eastwick - but are they really witches?  Everyone thinks they are, so that counts for something, right?

I was thinking of... Ladyhawke, which has Matthew Brodricke, and Michelle Pfieffer (I think). And then I was thinking of that other movie with Michelle Pfieffer where she's a witch... I can't remember the name though. It had Robert DeNiro as a flambouyant captain of a flying ship who catches lightning for a living. Stardust... maybe. Anyway I'm feeling pretty lazy so I'm not gonna link them.
