Weekly Theme for October 05: Killer Kill Scenes

This one's gonna be another one of those "high-brow" topics y'all have come to love and expect from us here at the Weekly Theme. I know it's late, but in my defense, I was killed in a killer kill scene earlier and my zombie fingers have finally started working well enough to type.

So let's talk this week about all of the greatest death scenes ever committed to film.

One of my recent favorites is Ted Raimi's character in The Midnight Meat Train. Very very brutal... but still pretty damn fun.

Also (without spoiling) I would say that last year's Burn After Reading had one of the most surprisingly and shockingly awesome kill scenes I've ever seen.

But I would say my all time favorite comes from a film that I really didn't care for much. Soderberg's Out of Sight ('98) has a death involving a hefty fella running up a flight of stairs with a loaded shotgun...... Hilarity ensues!!

Well let's hear it. I left quite a bit off this post, so I'll check back later and add some more. What's your favorite killer kill scene?

Peace & Brains

Emery the Living Dead.

"You all know me.   You know how I make a livin'... "   (Quint)

"Chrissie" , the very first victim in  JAWS .   A HORRIBLE death!

Obviously I can name about a thousand great Death Scenes due to my specialty of watching horror movies.   Thanks for starting this "playground" for me!   But before I start getting into all of the great Horror Movie deaths that I have seen I must mention one from an old western...   Slim Pickens in  Pat Garret and Billy the Kid .   I believe that this is the most overly long and overly dramatic death scenes ever filmed.   Bob Dylan wrote and performed a song for this particular scene in the movie (Knocking on Heaven's Door) and the scene is almost as long as the song.   Slim Pickens is one of my favorite actors of all time, by the way.

Now we will get on to the Horror Movies and I will try to drag my buddy, Phantasma-gore-ia, in here...

Jason's "death" in  Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter  (part IV) is one of the best of the series.   Little Corey Feldman buries a machette into the big guy's head.   Jason drops to his knees and then falls forward until the handle of the machette hits the floor.   Then, for just an instant, Jason's skull slides down the length of that machette blade in gruesome detail...

Quint in  JAWS  !   Going down fighting, knife in hand!   If you look closely you can see the rubber teeth of the fake shark bending against Robert Shaw's "flak-jacket" !   A GREAT scene just the same!

So many more...   where to begin? ...

The "exploding head" guy in  Scanners .... (anybody remember that one?) ...

Here are a couple more "non-horror"  movie moments to ponder...   Violent Machine-Gun Deaths ...

Bonnie and Clyde  ;   Not only the spectacular ending but pretty much most of the movie!   LOTS of gun violence in this one!

The Godfather  ;   Santino "Sonny" Corleone's death is nothing short of spectacular.   The rest of the movie is nothing to sneeze at either (see above) ...

The Wild Bunch  ;   What can I say...

Somebody help me out here!   I cannot be the only one on SPOUT who has ever enjoyed a death scene in a movie!

I also wanted to add another from a good modern western. There is a scene in The Proposition that hands down wins the "HOLY SHIT.... THAT JUST HAPPENED" Award. I'm not going to describe it 'cause it would spoil it. But if you've seen the film, you know excatly what I'm talking about. If you haven't, you owe it to yourself. It's an all around good flick anyways.

Wow.   Thank you very much!   I have heard of that movie but have not heard any of the gory details until now.   I put that on my "must-see" list...

Leeroy711,   I noticed that you have recently watched Fulci's  Zombie  and enjoyed it.   There might be hope for you yet.   There are a couple REALLY spectacular death scenes in that one.   The hot babe getting her throat ripped out is one of the high-lights.   The "eye-poking" scene is nothing short of legendary.   This is just a great movie all the way around and it is a pity that some of our younger members have never seen this gem.

Yeah, I was really into this film that scene in particular was really well done but as far as I'm concerned, tiger shark vs. zombie vs topless scuba girl... Well, it doesn't really get any better than that does it? I honestly had to watch and rewatch that scene a few times. I'm gonna have to find out how they shot that one. I can only imagine that it had to be one of the most dangerous scenes I've ever seen captured. I mean... you can't really train a shark not to attack.

I've been gaining an affinity for 70's horror in general lately. I rewatched Romero's Dawn of the Dead last night (speaking of great kill scenes):

and I picked up Argento's The BIrd With the Crystal Plumage at this unbelievable second hand store I've recently found. I've never seen an Argento flick but I'm a big fan of the cinematographer, Vittorio Storaro so I'm pretty damn excited.

Hmm, I actually watched that movie, but I don't know what you are talking about.  Honestly I don't remember much about the movie at all even though I saw it just a couple years ago.  All I can remember is some of the scenery.

Also, just a clarification about this week's theme.  Are these scenes where someone is intentionally killed by a person or an animal?  Or accidental deaths too?  Or just specifically violent deaths??

I would say this theme encompasses all awesome death scenes.

And, the scene in the Proposition I am referrign to involves a spear.
