Only You

Sometimes just the mere mention of a favorite vacation spot can send memories flushing your consciousness removing you from space and time revelling in stolen glances, scents, starry skies, mountain vistas, and pleasant thoughts.  I often will seek out a movie that is filmed in one (or more) of my favorite vacation spots.  Only You, starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Marisa Tomei is a charming annoying romance that takes you briefly to Venice, San Giminano, Rome, then spends a couple of breathless days in the coastal town of Positano.  I like to describe Positano, well the entire Almafi Coast as a place where the mountains meet the sea with surprise.  There are beautiful beaches of course, but step two feet into the water and it's surely 50 to 100 feet deep!  I spent four glorious days alone in Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello in 2000 and can't wait to go back with someone -or alone, it's such a romantic fantastical place where you can get lost within your own thoughts or someone else's eyes.  So I'll forgive a film like Only You for it's immature Faith Corvatch chasing a ouija board dream because of the beautiful filming in Italy.

Do you have a film that you might watch again and again only because of the scenery?  I'd love to hear your story.

Oh yes! I know exactly what you mean! A few films come to mind.. The Beach (I went to Thailand a few years ago, although I was not in the islands, I still love watching the culture), How Stella Got Her Groove Back (yes its cheesy, but Jamaica was quite the experience and I can't wait to go back). I also like to watch movies that are filmed in places I plan to go, like Under the Tuscan Sun (I think I have seen that like 20-30 times so far and I will probably watch it another 20-30 times), The Talented Mr. Ripley and Seven Years in Tibet (I will actually be going to India, not Tibet, but again its a culture thing)! I can't wait to go to Italy and Positano is on my list of places to stay!

Great films and great travels!  I'd love to hear more about them and especially where the film went to the city or beach you visted.  I've started some lists for us and new members to the group to populate for movies we enjoy because they bring back memories of travels.  Please add to them!  ..and create more lists. :)

I want to see Somewhere in Time because it is filmed at the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island, MI which is one of my favorite places to travel to. I haven't see the movie though, and I don't think its going to be very good. My guess would be that it will be fun to see it once, but I don't think I'll want to keep watching it just because of the place. We'll see.

I think you're right about Somewhere in Time.. I enjoyed it as a young girl - Christopher Reeve was soooo handsome and the movie was so sad really, but we were more easily entertained in the 80's I think.  We expect a lot more out of the filmography as well as the story these days.  I love Mackinac Island too.  I worked up there before college.

Ya know what's funny? I joined this group so I could talk about how the only reason that I watch Only You is because I love seeing Italy, specifically Rome and the Amalfi Coast. I just had digital cable installed so there a bunch of free movie chioces and Only You is on there. Its so sad, I just sit there with a glass of wine and watch Only You by myself, and the whole time I am simply trying to figure out if I was in the spot where the actors are at in the scene. I guess that's the beauty of film; the illusion of experiencing something for the first time or reliving something we loved. Good times.

Somwhere in Time holds up for me, even now. It's one of my favorites, not just for Reeve but for Jane Seymour.  I think that it's always been a love-it-or-hate-it movie, but now that Reeve is gone, for some it has greater impact than ever.
