Netherland's ransacked churches
I'm in the middle of watching Luther, starring my favorite Fiennes brother. While the film interests me relative to it's story about the reformation, I'm also saddened by the account of the ransacking of churches and the destroying of relics, history, and artistry in the name of Christ. I recently visited the Netherlands and went into many churches now converted to other uses, their interiors sparse due to strong misguided good intentions fighting hypocrasy and corruption of the 16th century Roman Catholic church. When traveling in Europe, one can not help but notice the prominent silhouettes of the city's church - or many churches pending the town's size. One of my favorite things to do is to visit as many of the churches as possible, catholic, protestant, otherwise, to get a feeling for their history and inspiration. Luther has many beautiful views of wooded country sides and what appears to be northern Germany and western Netherlands; the cities, churches, and squares reminding me of walks about Amsterdam.

Re: Netherland's ransacked churches
I too, have been to the Netherlands and enjoyed touring the fantastic
cathedrals there - they were absolutely gorgeous. One thing I found so
intriguing was that (some) members of the church, when they passed, would choose to be buried inside the church....so while you are touring the church you not only take in the history of the cathedral itself, but also the history of the past members of the church. I found it fascinating.
I have never seen Luther, but I plan to rent it now. Thanks for the recommendation.
