50 First Dates

Everyone liked 50 First Dates because Adam Sandler was in it, but it really wasn't that good. The plot pretty much made no sense. Also, most of the jokes in the movie were not very funny. I don't want to say what happens at the end so that I wont spoil the movie for those who haven't seen it (though I don't know why you would want to), but for those who did see it, didn't you think the conclusion was really dumb? Something like that would never work!

Ah! I totally disagree. The plot was unrealistic, but it made sense. And even though it was unrealistic, I pretended it was realistic when I was watching it. I thought it was a beautiful love story hidden in a cute and sort of wacky movie. I loved the end. The end is what did it for me.

I thought the exact opposite about over/underrated.  I didn't think the movie was that great but it was plenty cute, and I don't know anyone else that rated it well.  The conclusion was ridiculous of course, but the movie required a little suspension of disbelief anyway.

Re: 50 First Dates

The Top 5 group has gotten me hooked on talking about things in groups of five. So, overrated:

1) The Oscars are overrated. True, The Oscars aren't a movie, but they are probably the most overrated single thing in the domain of moviedom.

2) Napoloen Dynamite. Agreed. Kind of funny, but when I saw a whole series of keychains with Napoleon quotes at a Speedway in Watervliet, MI, I decided it was overrated.

3) The last three Star Wars movies. How can George Lucas make three of the most expensive and terrible movies ever and still cash in on the name "Star Wars?"

4) Michael Moore. There are so many great documentaries that got passed over by The Hype Angel and I can't see a single reason why she's set up camp in Michael Moore's backyard.

5) Martin Scorsese's recent films. Spend a day watching Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, and Raging Bull. Then spend a day watching Gangs of New York, The Aviator, and Bringing Out the Dead. The proof is in the pudding. I think film critics are afraid to give the films of legendary directors like Scorsese less than four stars.

paul: have you seen The Departed?  Gangs and the Aviator weren't that great, I liked Bringing Out the Dead, but the Departed is masterful.  It's no Taxi Driver, but give one of the greatest directors of all time a break if he can't beat one of the greatest films of all time every movie.
