Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Nightmare Before Christmas
I hate scary movies. I loved The Nightmare Before Christmas, in the same way that I love haunted corn mazes. I recently watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which was almost as creepy as The Nightmare Before Christmas, and I loved it too. I don't watch that many movies and I don't claim to be a Tim Burton expert, but I think...that I like Tim Burton Movies.
Here's my problem. Someone recently pointed out to me that Tim Burton may be be exploiting evil. Do I really want my future children watching cute dolls burning up and losing their eyeballs and Santa being tortued in a "hell like" place?
Are Tim Burton movies just too evil...or are they creepy done just right?

Re: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Nightmare Before Christmas
i dont think that the movies "exploit" evil so much as they ask you to evaluate "what is scary" and "why is it scary".
i think he normalizes fear.
he typically takes topics that are "creepy" and moves them forward in a way that is acceptable to a broader audience. for instance frankenweenie, should be a rather morbid story of a boy that "reincarnates" his dead dog. but it turns out to be an interesting evaluation on what power that humans should or should not have over death.
sometimes, i think that burton is saying "hey dont be afraid to die, cause maybe its something like this..."
