Discuss your favorites...and not-so-favorites

Hey, musical lovers. Let's welcome Kami, our newest member!

I want everyone in this group to answer the following questions.

1) What was the first musical you ever saw on stage?
2) What musical have you seen the most?
3) Of the musicals you've seen...which has the worst storyline?
4) Of the musicals you've seen...which has the worst music?
5) "..."...which has the most annoying music?
6) What is your desert island musical?
7) If a Broadway producer and said, "We want your talent so much that we'll produce around you. Choose your musical and the character and we'll make it happen," how would you respond? (Besides having the guy checked out or pinching your arm to make sure you were awake!)
8) Which musical is your guilty pleasure?
9) All-time favorite musical?

I'll go first.

1) What was the first musical you ever saw on stage?

The Sound of Music. My dad was stopped by a cop on the way home because he was eating ice cream and driving dangerously. I loved the show, but didn't understand the WWII overtones. I sang and danced around the house for days afterwards. I was probably 4.

2) What musical have you seen the most?

It's a toss up between several ones. I've seen the movie version of Hello Dolly at least 20 times. I've seen quite a few stage versions of Fiddler on the Roof as well as the film numerous times. I've also been involved and seen (preparing to blush) Bye, bye Birdie! a lot. I like it in fifth grade and, in all embarassing truth, haven't quite gotten over it.

3) Of the musicals you've seen...which has the worst storyline?

Oh...so many bad ones to choose from! Right now, I'm thinking Oliver. I just saw it at circle and was very distrubed about the happy songs with horrible, sad content. I mean, it's horrible to be entertained by the oppressed singing fun songs about starvation. Being a pauper is not fun, no matter how fun the songs are. Plus, Oliver is a dull character. The only redeeming factor of this show is Nancy.

4) Of the musicals you've seen...which has the worst music?

Oh, I don't know. I can't believe I wrote this question. I really don't like "Shipoopi" and "My White Knight" from The Music Man. Then, in Thorougly Modern Millie there's this stupid faux Jewish song. (Please, I hope not to offend anyone, but the song just doesn't fit. She's singing at a bar mitzvah...and it doesn't progress the plot.)

5) "..."...which has the most annoying music?

Bye, bye Birdie! and anything sung by Carol Channing.

6) What is your desert island musical?

I'm still writing it.

7) If a Broadway producer and said, "We want your talent so much that we'll produce around you. Choose your musical and the character and we'll make it happen," how would you respond? (Besides having the guy checked out or pinching your arm to make sure you were awake!)

I'd say that I want to play the witch in Into the Woods, Elphaba in Wicked, Dolly in Hello Dolly!, ...any other recommendations?

8) Which musical is your guilty pleasure?

Probably Hello Dolly!

9) All-time favorite musical?

Hm...I don't know. My all-time favorite musical composer is Stephen Sondheim, though.

Re: Discuss your favorites...and not-so-favorites

Thank you! :-)

Okay, a warning, I am a HUGE Andrew Lloyd Webber fan....

1) What was the first musical you ever saw on stage?

I was in Amahl and The Night Visitors - that'd be my first. The first one I ever saw that I was not in? The Phantom of the Opera.

2) What musical have you seen the most?

The Phantom of the Opera (it is my all time favorite)

3) Of the musicals you've seen...which has the worst storyline?

My personal opinion? Pirates of Penzance

4) Of the musicals you've seen...which has the worst music?

I can not say I am a huge Hairspray fan.

5) "..."...which has the most annoying music?

Hmm, I wouldn't say I have seen any with all that annoying of music.

6) What is your desert island musical?

What do you mean?

7) If a Broadway producer and said, "We want your talent so much that we'll produce around you. Choose your musical and the character and we'll make it happen," how would you respond? (Besides having the guy checked out or pinching your arm to make sure you were awake!)

Christine from Phantom or Cosette from Les Miserables

8) Which musical is your guilty pleasure?

Phantom and Cats *dodges tomatoes*

9) All-time favorite musical?

It is a tie between Phantom of the Opera and Sunset Boulevard

Clarification: desert island musical

If you were stranded on a desert island, what musical would you want to watch, sing, think about, etc.? Or....if a great musical-hater destroyed all the musicals but one, which one would you save?

Re: Clarification: desert island musical

GREAT TOPIC!!!!  Love it love it love it.

Ok, enough with the praises.  Onto the answers.  Also, welcome Kami.  Thanks for requesting membership into the musical group!

1) What was the first musical you ever saw on stage?

In high school: Kiss Me Kate.  Professionally: The Secret Garden.

2) What musical have you seen the most?

If you mean when I'm not teching...Phantom of the Opera.  I'm up to 4 now.  I guess that makes me a Phan.

3) Of the musicals you've seen...which has the worst storyline?

I don't like Oliver either all that much.  I also don't like The Music Man.  I think this music con man thing is completely improbable.  And I don't understand Iowa.

4) Of the musicals you've seen...which has the worst music?

I'm going with Oklahoma...coincidentally.  There are catchy songs in Oliver at any rate.

5) "..."...which has the most annoying music?

Again with Oklahoma and The Music Man, generally speaking.  I'm not a traditionalist when it comes to musicals, mostly, and I find all of these songs annoying.  I trying to talk myself into auditioning for Oklahoma next year; I don't think I'll be able to crew it.  I'd probably have to find something with a trigger to amuse myself.

6) What is your desert island musical?

It depends on how I'm feeling.  If I'm feeling down, I would think about Spamalot because I would make myself laugh all the time.

7) If a Broadway producer and said, "We want your talent so much that we'll produce around you. Choose your musical and the character and we'll make it happen," how would you respond? (Besides having the guy checked out or pinching your arm to make sure you were awake!)

If I lost some poundage, these are my thoughts: the Lady of the Lake in Spamalot; Elphaba in Wicked; I think her name is Kate or Katherine in Kiss Me Kate; Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady; Mother or the activist in Ragtime; Jo in Little Women; Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins; Maria in the Sound of Music; Kathy Seldon in Singin' in the Rain...to name a few.

8) Which musical is your guilty pleasure?

Hmmm...?  Probably Phantom, maybe?  But I'm loud and proud about it...  Maybe Kiss Me Kate?  I've always loved Kiss Me Kate.  Or, Singin' in the Rain.  I watch it so much...so much.  And I sing the songs even when I haven't seen it in a while.

9) All-time favorite musical?

Sheesh.  Hard.  I think the top seven are (in no particular order): Phantom, Spamalot, Wicked, Kiss Me Kate, Ragtime, Singin' in the Rain, and The Secret Garden.  Things that make you go hmmm...

Re: Discuss your favorites...and not-so-favorites

First off kudos to the questions! I actually have to think on my day off. :o)

1) What was the first musical you ever saw on stage?

The Phantom of the Opera. This was my first ride on B.A.R.T! (BART is the Bay Area Rapid Tranportation for those who have never visited San Francisco or surrounding cities) Unfortunately I have seen this play three times and the best one was in San Francisco. This is a play that should be seen in a small setting to really grasp the its true beauty.

2) What musical have you seen the most?

Singing in the Rain. Seems like everytime I'm sick I watch this movie. As far as live plays, well I hardly ever see the same one. Plus I have been attending more Opera's lately.

3) Of the musicals you've seen...which has the worst storyline?

I'm not really sure about this one.

4) Of the musicals you've seen...which has the worst music?

Phantom of the Opera (the movie) hands down. That was the worst display of singing I have ever seen in a movie. Sorry hope I did not offend anyone.

5) "..."...which has the most annoying music?

Look at my answer number 4.

6) What is your desert island musical?

I'm waiting for MsMaxwell to finish it! :o)

7) If a Broadway producer and said, "We want your talent so much that we'll produce around you. Choose your musical and the character and we'll make it happen," how would you respond? (Besides having the guy checked out or pinching your arm to make sure you were awake!)

This is a tough one. A remake of Singing in the Rain.

8) Which musical is your guilty pleasure?

My Fair Lady

9) All-time favorite musical?

For now I will have to put The Sound of Music
