Year in Review: What Was Your Favorite Fantasy of 2006?

So, before the list for what to look forward to in 2006 disappears forever, as 2006 is about to disappear forever (the movies will be listed elsewhere if not already; the list will change to 2009), I thought I'd ask you fantasy-lovers out there: what was your favorite fantasy film from 2006 and why?

There were lots this year to choose from, 26 according to our list.  Though I'm not sure if I'd really rate A Scanner Darkly as fantasy...but maybe someone else can convince me?

I haven't seen all of them (and don't probably plan to), but of the ones I saw, I enjoyed Pirates 2 the best, for reasons contained in an earlier discussion.  It just had lots to offer and surpassed my expectations, which were automatically low because it's a sequel.  I also really enjoyed Superman Returns and the Illusionist.  Superman will always be my favorite superhero, and a couple of viewings later, and even my not so favorable impression of Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane is relaxing a little.  The Illusionist was a smart movie and visually stunning.

So, what do you think?  What was your favorite fantasy of 2006 and why?

I liked Superman Returns probably the best out of what I have seen.  I enjoyed it a lot.  I think that Bryan really pulled off the mythos of the earlier movies while holding onto his own vision.  + I got to see Parker Posey in a movie theater, which is always a plus.

I have a feeling that if I had seen Pan's Labyrinth that I'd be choosing that.  The visual aspects look amazing, and the story elements are what I'd be into if I were making film instead of watching.

I noticed someone added Eragon to the Best Fantasy list...I haven't seen this.  I don't know if I want to yet.  Can someone elaborate as to why they added it to the list?  What makes it the best?  And then, if you would be so kind, provide a little explanation as to why it's the "best" in the portion where it says "Edit" under the movie title in the Best list.  That's what I've been trying to do with the Best list, to show why they are the best.

Also, if you are a group member and would like to start a discussion about Eragon because you've seen it, and you think it's the bees knees, start a new convo with the title all in caps, and discuss away.

I would say similar if anyone has seen Pan's Labyrinth .  I'd like to know about that one.

In fact, if you'd like to discuss a movie that you have seen that's currently out, please start a convo and title it in all caps so we know it's about a specific movie that's out.

Now, in keeping with this convo, anyone else have a favorite fantasy from 2006?  We've got two takers for Superman, though I'd give it my second favorite.  I've heard lots of mixed reactions about that one.  Some people can't stand the direction Bryan Singer took or felt it didn't live up to their expectations.  Anyone care to comment?

Say goodbye to the 2006 list, for it is gone, just like 2006 is gone.  All movies in that list were transferred, if not already, to other group lists.  I did not include A Scanner Darkly, though, because I thought about it and felt that that movie was more strictly scifi.  If you disagree, let me know.

Happy New Year!

I would have to say that The Fountain was my favorite fantasy movie of 2006. I know people would probably classify it as a sci-fi movie, but I see fantastic elements throughout the film. I would go so far as to say that it was the best sci-fi/fantasy film since LOTR.

Really?  Actually, the Fountain was part of our list; I would say it's both scifi and fantasy (but that gets into another earlier discussion).  What did you like about it?  And would you like to join the group?
