Star Wars vs The Lord of the Rings
These two mega-trilogies (or six-logy, whatever the word is, for SW) are generally considered the cream of the crop of fantasy and movie blockbusters and pop culture.
Which one is your favorite?
Personally, I go back and forth. On the one hand, the original SW trilogy has been my favorite all my life. On the other hand, LOTR come from my favorite books and live up to all of my expectations. It's a tough one to call...! So, put in your vote!

Re: Star Wars vs The Lord of the Rings
As films, the LOTR trilogy are probably better. Script, plot, probably even cinematography. However, none of this would have occurred without Star Wars. So my vote goes to Star Wars, and more of an originator in the fantasy genre.
The first one (Episode IV) is the best of all these film in my book. Way ahead of its time, Star Wars is a historical reference point. LOTR could be seen as almost one film. It was conceived of and shot together, only released separetely. A tribute to an existing work. Star Wars, on the other hand, was more like Panora's Box - a watershed moment for Hollywood and moviegoers alike. The following Star Wars films had moments of brilliance, and also lapses into careless sapiness (Ewoks) which eroded its greatness.
However, stacking up the entire LOTR trilogy against Star Wars IV, and I'd still say that Star Wars wins. The remaining Star Wars films are icing.

Re: Star Wars vs The Lord of the Rings
lotr...
star wars is awesome, but the plot seems so disconnected sometimes.
whereas with the rings, each movie picks up exactly where the last one left off.
and when i'm watching the rings...i kinda wanna be there with frodo helping the poor guy out.
with star wars...not so much.

Re: Star Wars vs The Lord of the Rings
See, of all of the Star Wars movies, I'd say Empire (V) was the best or my favorite. It built on the starwarsy goodness of A New Hope (IV), which is, of course, the original, but I think SW took on that "epic" status with the second film and the whole Darth Vader is Luke's father thing. And with the SW movies, one can look at them individually because they are disconnected.
LOTR, on the other hand, I kind of view as one large, super long movie. I don't watch them all at the same time, but if I start watching them, I have to watch them all within a few movie watching times.
And actually, to disagree with gothere's assessment, in reality Lord of the Rings precedes Star Wars. Maybe cinematically LOTR couldn't produce all of those awesome special and visual effects without the ILM and Skywalker peoples, but the grand scale story started with Tolkien way back when.
Still tough, and the vote's one to one without my two cents. Any other takers on this topic?

My vote goes for LOTR, but I don't have any intelligent reason for it. I just loved LOTR, but could never make it through Star Wars without falling asleep...

It's 2 to 1 in favor of LOTR... any other votes?
Althought, PammyK, I can understand you falling asleep during the "prequels," but have you seen the Empire Strikes Back???? If so, did you snooze?

I am not sure which on I saw. I watched it at a friend's house and it was before the new ones came out...I think it was just the first of the old.

LOTR used to be my favorite book for a while. Maybe it still is....
But nonetheless, I don't know if the films stand on their own, at least in my mind. They are still great fun with knowledge of the books though.
I've had obsessions with both Star Wars and LOTR in my teen years, but LOTR was really the literary LOTR, not the films. So I have to put my vote for Star Wars on this one.
