Is the DaVinci Code fantasy?
You will only be able to answer this question if you've read the book. It's the ending and the path to the ending that Robert Langdon takes that could possibly qualify it as fantasy. It's one of the movies I'm most looking forward to seeing this year, but I didn't know if I could call it strict fantasy since it's actually based on very realistic paintings and artwork that actually exist.
The effect of that journey, however, is something quite interesting. Anyone read it who wants to comment?

Re: Is the DaVinci Code fantasy?
Me too! It's one of my favorites for sure. The movie is on my must-see list.
Given the ending, would you call it "a fantasy"? (For any replies, try not to spoil for those who haven't read it).

i didn't even know "nerd-thriller" was a category! it's hard to keep up... anyways, i'll add it to the list of mustsees unless somebody has a strong feeling the other way.

Re: Is the DaVinci Code fantasy?
Originally I was thinking DaVinci Code was fantasy, but after reading about some of the other movies on the list I think I would just call it fiction. It just doesn't compare to some of the real fantasy movies out there.

Re: Is the DaVinci Code fantasy?
Well, I definitely think you're right in that it's not a traditional fantasy with magic and dragons and faeries and stuff...
I was thinking, though, that fantasy is as much about the extension of human imagination as it is about the most imaginary things there could be in a movie. That's why some movies like Dogma are on the list. I mean, angels on earth and all that. And Alanis as God. There you are.
The DaVinci Code is somewhat of a stretch... on the other hand, since you've read the book, it's delving into something very much a product of human imagination. I mean, if you think about it, the ending of the DaVinci Code is not documented fact, and it's countering something very much rooted in thousands of years of faith and belief. And how do we get to that ending? Through some "legendary" code embedded in great works of art that an art historian/symbologist must crack (along with a French codebreaker) - it has an almost Indiana Jones quality to it without the whips and giant boulder.
That's what makes me think it's got a fantasy aspect to it.
Plus, I'm just really excited to see the movie... Any other thoughts?

Ok I suppose. I just have to broaden my understanding of fantasy.

Re: Is the DaVinci Code fantasy?
So, who's going to go see it? I'm riddled with excitement!
And, I've heard the movie referred to as "fantasy" at least twice in the news, though usually by religious types who feel the book and the movie should be burned for its threat against the very fabric of Christianity.
I still think it's about the spark of imagination and the big long scavenger hunt involved that makes it something of a fantasy. Let's hope the movie does the book justice.

Re: Is the DaVinci Code fantasy?
My mom couldn't make it through the book because she thought it was against her beliefs. I enjoyed pretending it was real when I read the book, but understanding it was fantasy when I put the book down. I don't think I'm going to go see it. I think I will wait for it to be at the library - maybe a year or two from now, but I'm still excited to see it even though I'm waiting so long.
