I haven't read this whole thread, so this may already be explained somewhere above.

In my filmblog I posted a review for Sun Dogs. If you go to the Africa Unite movie page, it incorrectly lists the Sun Dogs review.

There are other instances of this, which I can fix if there is a way to do it.

Hey Joe,

This isn't an error, per se.  Your Sun Dogs review shows up on the Africa Unite page because you linked it in your review.  On the filmblog page itself, the films are displayed alphabetically, not necessarily in the order which they were mentioned.

Whenever you "link" a film in a review, it will show up on that film's detail page.  Its kind of a different way to discover new films, but its not perfect.

We're currently working on ways to improve the film blog's functionality, and I think the Link a movie feature is something to focus on.  As a film reviewer, what are your thoughts?  Would it help you if you could associate films to your review at different  levels (for example: Main subject, related movie, or Just mentioned) when you're linking a film?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Xavier

well, i'd like to put the link to the movie in the title or subject of my review in the filmblog. can that be done? there is no link icon there, but i guess i could just try adding the html by hand?

I'd like the icons to the right of a review to be in order of mention, not alphabetic.

it makes sense to me that all links in a review point to the relevant movie pages, but going the other way doesn't seem efficient. i think i'd just have links on the movie page point only to filmblog reviews - perhaps, that is, to links in the title or subject, not in the body of the review. so you could differentiate links by whether they're in the body or the title. then you might have a second, lesser list of links to mere mentions of the movie in other filmblog reviews or articles.

just off-the-cuff thoughts from a simple maven. thanks for your work.

I'd just like to throw in my opinion.  I like that movie pages show blog entries that have mentioned the movie.  I sometimes mention lots of movies in a blog and it's not really specifically about one of them or any of them.  Some people may have different styles of blogging.

Hey Joe,

I've shared your feedback with our usability team.  We're currently in the process of reviewing all the parts of the site, and your suggestions (many of which I agree with) will definitely be taken into consideration when we look at the Film Blog section.

When you're talking about reviews appearing on "secondary" (or mentioned) films, do you think there's a place anywhere for those reviews of other movies?

As for a way to differentiate between the type of mention, without you having to code in the title, what do you think about categorizing the film which the movie was about?

For example, you'd still title your review, "A really great comedy," but next to the title it said, a review of WEDDING CRASHERS.

Feel free to give us feedback anytime!

Xavier

Re:Bugs and Errors

When I click in a tag it brings me to a list of movies that the tag has been used on.  There is a link that says "Who used this tag?"  Sometimes I click on it and it says "Nobody has used this tag"  If that is true, then how did all of those movies get tagged?

We've begun sourcing in tags for some films from All Movie Guide, so that it becomes easier to find similar movies.  This may be the source of those tags, but I will check with our developers.

blog comments

When someone comments on one of your blog posts, you get an email notifying you of this.  If you click on the link in the email, it will bring you directly to a page showing the comment.  If you want, you can leave a comment on that comment.  However this comment doesn't appear when you look at the original blog post.  Is this an error?  How are people supposed to see this comment?

Re:Bugs and Errors

I was trying to link a movie in my blog and was unable to find the title on the list of choices. But when I searched the sight, I found the film. It is Shutter (2008). In this same film, I also could not link to The Secret (2006) or The Man Who Fell To Earth (1976). All of which I found on the site when I searched for them outside of my film blog.

Could you look into the link a movie search feature?

Also, a general complaint. In the search box, it says that you can search by actor, but when I put in an actor's name, I only get titles that have the actor's name in them, like Saturday Night Live Presents Whoever. I would really like to see a list of films starring that actor instead.

Thanks for your help.

Re:Bugs and Errors

Thanks for the heads up.  I went ahead and forwarded your concerns to our Technical Wizards so hopefully we'll have a fix for that before too long.  Thanks for taking the time to bring it to our attention!

Yeah I have been having strange problems with the search system not working correctly when it always has before.  Specifically I'm talking about when you start to type a title into the search bar.  It brings a drop down box of titles that begin with the series of letters you have typed.  Sometimes it gives me some strange lists of titles that don't start with the words I typed.  Sometimes it doesn't give me any results, even though I know such a title exists.  And then when I actually click on the search button and go to a new page it is fine.  It's the drop down list that is behaving strangely.  Maybe this has carried over to the link a movie section as well.

Re:Bugs and Errors

We've all been having problems with that (myself included, unfortunately!).  I spoke with those who handle the wizardry that makes the site work, and they said they hope to have a fix for the search function and the drop-down box shortly.  Fingers crossed!!! :-)
