What's a Selkie?
Okay, not a dog. Selkie-folk are the seal-people from ancient Celt mythology. The best explanation you'll find is in the description of the "dark ones" in The Secret of Roan Inish. But you'll find other selkies here and there. They have in common an element of search/quest and/or discomfort with their current environment. Also there is a kind of forlorn longing for a kind of life that existed before, but not so much now.
Right. So. Think you're Selkie? Or not Selkie?

Re: What's a Selkie?
Yeah. Wow. I never knew I was a selkie until you wrote that
description, but it's true. In particular, the life that existed before
thing. I love the time I live in, but feel there are definitely healthy
ways of living that have been forgotten. Call of the Wild
touches on this in a heavy-handed way. But means of survival in the
modern world are less tangible (and maybe less rewarding) than in days
of yore. High school graduation has become a flimsy rite of
passage to substitute for sending boys and girls into a hostile
wilderness to prove to themselves they are no longer children. Maybe
that's why young men who receive their Eagle Scout wear it with such
pride. There's not a whole lot out there anymore that is earned the
hard way anymore.

Re: What's a Selkie?
Call of the Wild? Okay, I'll add that one to the selkies movie list. I haven't seen it in forever. And I've long ago forgotten the book. I had better revisit. In many native North American traditions, wolves and bears and -- well lots of animals -- are, like the selkies, sometimes among us in human form.

I never knew what I was till now. Thanks for putting a name to that inner voice that kept asking for sushi. I am proud to be apart of this group.

Re: What's a Selkie?
I'm pretty sure I'm not a selkie. Although sometimes I wish I lived in a little house on the prairie as a farmer's wife and in the morning I would gather eggs and bake pies and stuff, but I don't want to deal with like wolves and bears and caulking the wagon - does that make me a selkie? Its ok if you say no.

Re: What's a Selkie?
You're totally a selkie, Pammy. Brad too.
But you don't have to like raw fish.
Although it helps.

Does eating pickled herring count?
How about a longing to fly through dark cold waters?

Re: What's a Selkie?
Totally and completely, Filmchef. Do you have pickled herring sitings in films to share?
