Introductions or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Queer Cinema

Hey!

I started this group because when I joined Spout I found it almost impossible to search through and find films with queer subject matter. It's been a rather slow process but I've been building "The List" for the past couple of weeks and hopefully in the near future it might become a relatively complete source of queer cinema.*

As for the introduction, I'm 24 and living in California. I graduated college but am currently unemployed and spending most of my time watching OnDemand and browsing the aisles of Blockbuster. I took a few LGBT courses in college which ignited my passion for queer cinema and hopefully by starting this group I can help do the same for others.

I always seem to be online and despite the rather intimidating profile photo I'm a nice guy, so feel free to send me a message.

 - Chris

 * Especially once more people join and if they feel inclined to sort through the films and add them to the sub-category lists that I've slowly been compiling.

I usually don't appreciate LGBT films very much - I guess because it doesn't appeal to me on a personal level.

However, I just watched Show Me Love or Fucking Amal and I was really drawn into the story. I thought the performances were first rate even though the cinematography was a little choppy and grainy.

Welcome to Spout. Hope to have more to talk to you about in the future.

WOW,what a long list of sub-category of lists;great job!!I too like to go through the aisles of blockbuster,as well as go through  the reviews, new releases,my que, etc.. online at blockbuster.I use to watch on demand when i had cable but now with satellite, directv, i watch a lot of ifc, sundance, hbo and whole amount of movies, shows, etc. that i find particularly interesting as i flip to the remote.I also record a lot of programs through directvplus(direct tv tivo version)that i find i can not watch at that time or u just want to pass through all those commercials, etc.I find a lot of interesting programming by just clicking on the guide, then click channel, click info. and u find all the shows programming for the next 7 days.I find a lot of interesting titles that way that i generally do not find, otherwise. What do u do when the movie u want to see is neither instore or online in blockbuster but yet,u do not want to buy the film?just watch and rent;By the way,i do find movies that are not available for rent at blockbuster both at ifc, sundance, and linktv;some (movies) old, new, controversial, and or exclusive to the channel.Oh yeah, like u, at the moment ,i spend a lot time watching rented movies and watching the tube.

I'm Erin.  I'm 28 and I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Film (but with no particular emphasis on Queer cinema).  Currently I watch and score GLBT films for "GLAAD" so in the past year and a half I've seen more Queer cinema than I have in my whole life up to this point.

Video stores are sorely lacking but Netflix has some great selections online.

GLAAD's website also lists what movies and television shows are coming out.   http://www.glaad.org/eye/index.php

Wow, that sounds like my dream job.

I'm in desperate need of Netflix. Within a month I had already checked out the entire selection of queer films at my local Blockbuster and considering the area I live in (Central California - if you've driven through it you know) I doubt I'll be able to anytime in the near future.

Wow, that's great. You have to make sure and let everyone know when it will be available.

My best friend from college was going out with the creater of RIck and Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple In All The World for a while and know what a huge deal it is for him that that short film was chosen to become a weekly animated series on Logo. I already saw the first few minutes they posted on the network website and its hilarious (despite continuing on cliched queer themes - but hey, it's something). Hopefully this trend of diverse and wideranging genres of film and television of queer subject matter will continue.

a sci-fi musical called strange frame: Love & Sax. just saw the trailer and website;also your site in imdb:http://imdb.com/title/tt0969345/maindetails

good graphics on the characters;they looked pretty cool;movie will not be released til 2009 ;where will it be distributed;is it national, which cities?

thats pretty neat ,you are one of the writers of the film, and the cinematographer, producer and director and you won a 2005 INDE AWARD for involving Hawai‘i's students with strange frame

Since you are already blockbuster instore member ,consider having a blockbuster online membership; Every online dvd envelop you have can be exchanged for a free instore (hardcase cover)dvd; You get double the movies for the same mthly price. It is true though, that there are more dvd titles available in netflix but blockbuster is more economical:Plus you also, get a free coupon, once a mth for a free instore movie or game rental.

Re: Introductions or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Queer Cinema

Hey there,
I'm glad somebody started this group and I appreciate your hard work.  Thanks!  I haven't gone through the lists yet but I will browse them eventually and I love having those kinds of lists as a resource.  I'll add to them if I think of anything.

I guess most of us are aware of what the "top" gay films are (the "click list" and such, from Logo) and we can usually find them if we really want to.  But it seems like it should be easier.  Even though I live in Los Angeles, I still have a hard time finding interesting new GLBT films and I wish there were better places to find them easily/conveniently.  I guess what I'm getting at is, what have people experienced with Netflix (or other mail order services) in terms of quality and selection of GLBT films?  I'm tired of renting blockbusters (from Blockbuster).  Is it just me or does it still seem like finding gay themed films is harder than it needs to be?  And more variety would be good too.

(Hopefully this isn't too much off topic.)
