I'm Coming Out! But Do I Want The World To Know . . . ?

The trope of "coming out of the closet" is one that has exploded into mainstream cinema over the past decade. Not only are LGBT characters finally being portrayed in a positive light, but our struggles are breaking down some of our society's heteronormative values and allowing those outside of the community to learn and hopefully come to accept us as fellow human beings.

Now with my slight diatribe out of the way, a question to you all: Of all the films with "coming out" as an intergral part of the storyline, which one has had the most profound effect on you (either good or bad)?

I'm going to really date myself here. I've always felt that popular culture (via television) affects the perceptions of more people in this country than seeing movies in a movie theater.  To that end, there was a somewhat cheesy t.v. movie called Doing Time On Maple Drive from 1992.  It was very melodramatic and over the top but for some reason at affected me at the time.  Jim Carrey was in it and he played the straight brother and he had a pretty (unintentionally) funny line when he's screaming at the parents..."I've DONE my time on Maple Drive!"  I would also like to say that being in a hotel room with my father as a kid and watching the Richard Simmons Show probably set me back a few years from coming out.  I thought to myself, what if I came out to him right now?  Of course it was torture at the time but now I look back on it and I can't help but find it extremely funny.

More recently, I thought The Edge of Seventeen really nailed the coming out experience for a kid in the 80's.
