Which of these movies about boxing is your favorite?

Please reference this thread for the rules of this group.

I just saw The Set-Up and I think it's my new favorite boxing movie!  It's probably the shortest one too.  Which of these is your favorite boxing movie?  Sorry if I left your favorite out, but I didn't want the list to be TOO long.  Please leave comments!

Please vote only once in each poll.

Body and Soul
Champion
Cinderella Man
Fat City
Gentleman Jim
Million Dollar Baby
Raging Bull
Rocky

Well I have only seen Million Dollar Baby but I will not give a vote for it. I almost got thrown out of the theater because I was laughing so hard throughout the entire film. I know, I'm evil.

I immediately thought of Million Dollar Baby but it is not ultimately about boxing at all--albeit a "boxing movie." And It is rather obvious in structure. So I went with Cinderella Man. It had a low-key, underdog tone the entire movie--very befitting of a Cinderalla man. Also, I liked the period relationship between the protagonist and his wife.Yup, I'm happy with that choice.

I *love* The Set-Up.  Love it - glad you enjoyed it, Rizzo.  I just barely hit the vote button for Rocky.  But they're similar in that they're both great dramas that happen to involve boxers.

Have you seen Scary Movie 4?  It's pretty mediocre overall, but the Million Dollar Baby pariody in the ring when everyone's necks keep getting snapped is so funny it's almost worth just renting the movie and fast forwarding to that moment if you don't want to watch the rest.  Or you could just rent Million Dollar Baby again and laugh at it some more.

Yeah, Million Dollar Baby sucks pretty hard. I don't know if I've ever watched a movie that's supposedly "good" and hated it so much upon first viewing. I voted Raging Bull because in my mind, it's one of the greatest movies of all time, and by far the best boxing movie. I debated whether or not to give Cinderella Man a vote though, because I feel like it's way underappreciated.

I've only seen Raging Bull and Cinderella Man, and though I liked Cinderella Man fine, I liked Raging Bull a lot.  Other than the Departed, it's my reigning Scorsese favorite (of the handful I've seen).  But I'm not really a fan of boxing movies.  I haven't been able to sit through a Rocky movie all the way through yet. Hence, my limited pool from which to vote.   The end.

Re:Which of these movies about boxing is your favorite?

Boxing always seemed such a stupid concept -- two guys (or women) who have no beef with one another standing up to punch each other's lights out.  So I guess that's why I've only seen two of the listed films:  Rocky and Cinderella Man.  I actually loved both, but voted for Cinderella Man because it's better, and I feel it's been underappreciated, too.

I keep intending to see Raging Bull one day, after all I've heard about it.  And now I'm curious about The Set Up.  :-)

Re:Which of these movies about boxing is your favorite?

A good point is emerging: Maybe boxing movies are dated. People generally don't grow up with boxing anymore. But a few years ago, I realized that long, long ago, the first sport I learned was boxing. My dad would get down on his knees on the rug in the livingroom, and my brother and I would take turns with the kids' boxing gloves--how to guard, protect against a body blow, etc. My dad was more or less a pacifist. But his dad had boxed as a way to suppliment his income during hard times. Guys would come through the small town on the prairies, and they'd be big, and they'd claim to be boxers, and they'd take all comers. My Scottish grandfather was rather short and not very heavy and just worked in the local grain elevator, so the odds on him were terrible. He'd bet on himself, win,  and feed the family for a long time when a lot of folks were short on food. Maybe that's what lies behind my vote for Cinderella Man.
