It probably goes without saying that I would pick the Academy Awards but more because I like the awards themselves and all the hoopla, not so much because, you know, I think they're, like, right half the time :-).

Of course, I like awards in general.  There's something so awarding about them.

I survey about a dozen awards. I don't like any of them, particularly, and I focus on nominations rather than winners. From a long list of nominations, I select the films I want to see in the next year or so.

They're all interesting; I like to know who (which film) wins what and where, but I had to vote for the Oscar because it's the one I feel most connected to.  Even when the Academy's choices disappoint or even piss me off.  I watch the show nearly every year.  Most of the others I never get to see or even hear about.

What I really want is for them to let me pick the winners.  ;-)   Or 'fess up as to why they voted as they did.

Wow I'm actually rather surprised at how much of a landslide The Academy Award is getting so far.  I didn't really expect it to beat the People's Choice or MTV Movie awards, but I thought there might be more affinity towards some of the others.

I was trying to decide between the Palme d'Or and the Leone d’Oro, but I had to go with the latter.  I think Fahrenheit 9/11 winning at Cannes a few years ago was too absurd.

I didn't vote for the Academy - though IF they were doing things properly, I would vote for them.  Too often they choose the filmmaker whose turn it is to win* -or- they pick a film to win not so much on the quality of the film, but instead the win is based upon the political message...

* For example, M. S. winning for directing a remake.

I think in a similar way, paying attention to nominations but often rolling my eyes at the winners. Like tadiv says, it often feels like the Academy has  ulterior motives.

For example, I love Clint Eastwood even more than the next guy, but that doesn't mean Million Dollar Baby deserved Best Picture.

I don't trust an Academy that needs advertising to learn about its subject matter. ("For your consideration: _______ for Best _______.")

Definitely agree with JimBell and SkyPilot.

I think Cannes is the most interesting of all the awards with their constantly rotating lineup of judges from around the world; big name directors, up and coming actors, screenwriters, etc. It always seems exciting and new; nothing expected and fresh every year.

I lost interest in the Oscars around 1996 when I started high school and haven't really payed too much attention since. I'll always check to see who has been nominated and which films win, but neither has impacted my viewing habits in the least.

Only recently have I begun to check out the Independent Spirit Awards, about the time I got IFC and was able to watch it live. Sadly, it's more or less a 'indie' version of the Oscars and getting closer and closer to it each year.

Sundance still manages to find some great movies and I love the whole Sundance Workshop that's helping some decent movies get made, but with all the hoopla the past 5 or so years with it being the "IT" event for rich celebutards and the like is slowly killing it. Hopefully that rumor about Robert Redford trying to eliminate the Hollywood element from the Festival and returning to its roots is true.

MTV . . . ummm. Schlocky and stupid but sometimes I'm swayed to check out the Best Kiss nominees. :)

I'm a sucker for the Best Picture Oscar. I don't really know why, maybe it is the allure of the whole spectacle that is Oscar. And though many times their choices make me crazy (Crash), I still try to see all the nominees and winners. And I've been trying to catch up on the past ones as well.

First I have to say Venice Film Festival - Leone d’Oro (Golden Lion), becasue it is the oldest film Festival in the world and then Berlin International Film Festival - Goldener Bär (Golden Bear). Alot of them on the list including Cannes and I still go through the winners, but its to much hollywood hype for me these day. As where Venice is not so much even though it is the oldest and Berlin its mostly European.

I prefer the more independent festivals, not so much hype. Plus I am a huge Horror fan and the ocasiionally Catherine Breillat film.
