What a great poll - really tough choices... I had to review my ratings for the six that I have seen... My vote is cast for The 400 Blows.

[Although I've only seen half the film, I'll go with Mr. Kane. I think the film had so much of the passion and intelligence that Wells brought to film making, usually for the good but not always.

For me it was Badlands. I've seen all of Malick's film (just four) so far, and while they are all good, I feel like he began with the perfect film and then went just slightly downhill from then on.
I found it interesting that three of these movies had "night" in the title and two of them had the phrase "night of the" in the title. I'm not sure what that means, but maybe if you are a first time director you can put this phrase in the title of your film for some extra luck.

I've seen two, Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon, and I think the choice is obvious between the two of them. Citizen Kane was pretty brilliant.
Incidentally, I saw this article too before a poll was made about it!

Risselada:
Obviously I could only vote for one movie out of that list... George Romero is a GOD in the directing world and NOTLD is, quite simply, one of the best movies ever made...

My favorite filmmakers of all time are The Coen brothers yet curiously enough, their first film is my least favorite! I still love it, but it's the only one I would consider less than perfect for me.
Also interesting is that two fo these, Jean Vigo's L'Atalante and Charles Laughton's The Night of the Hunter are each othe only feature films that either of these guys ever made. I wonder if they still would have been as high on this list if they had gone on to make further films, whether better ones or worse ones.

Ah dang -- there are so many movies I need to see.... Of this list, I've only seen two: Citizen Kane (which got my vote) and Badlands. Though maybe I shouldn't have voted at all. I just liked the way Kane was put together.
