I'll admit I haven't actually seen City of Ember yet or Garfield.  I very highly doubt there will be many votes from people here for Garfield, but I guess I'll wait and see.

But I find Bill Murray in the other three entries, The Life Aquatic, Lost in Translation, and Broken Flowers to all be complete revelations!

Because Jim Jarmusch is one of my absolute favorite filmmakers, and I find his sad former swinger character in Broken Flowers to be so perfect for Murray (you may argue but I think it's the right next step after Lost in Translation), I had to pick Don Johnston.  Bill Murray's real hidden talent lies in that sad face and sometimes saying very little or nothing at all is the most effective from a guy you know know can deliver a hilarious line so well.

Well time to expand your horizons!

I voted for The Life Aquatic because I love the roles that Wes Anderson gives to Bill Murray, and The Life Aquatic gave Bill the main role in a truly epic Anderson dark comedy. I consider it dark comedy at least, or maybe it's just extremely cynical. Regardless I approve, with much gusto.

It was a tough decision between Life Aquatic and Lost in Translation, but I went with Steve Zissou. why? Well, i think both characters were beautifully broken, but there was something less despicable about the Steve Zissou character to me.. I don't know what exactly. I guess I felt in the end that he was heading somewhere, unlike the inevitability of the Lost in Translation character. But yes, the sad face where he doesn't really need to say anything, that's exactly what I love about those movies. I will have to check out Broken Flowers now:)

I really liked him as Bob Harris in Lost in Translation, but I had to go with Don Johnston in Broken Flowers.  Something about the way the character could just sit there staring ahead, completely unable to function or take action until prompted by someone else.

I haven't seen Ember yet or Garfield (I find the cartoon boring so had no interest in the film, Murray or no).  Was a little hard to choose between Johnston and Harris -- both those performances were more effective than his Steve Zissou.  But Johnston won in the end -- the face has it.  He was a bit more believable there, I think, than in Translation.  If only a little.

Thanks, btw, for inviting me to this group!  I look forward to more polls.

:-)

I have to go with Steve Zissou (I haven't seen Garfield or City of Ember).  While I liked Broken Flowers and Lost in Translation, Murray's characters in both were helpless and depressing, the kind of guys who have things happen to them rather than the kind who do things.  Zissou was a take charge kind of guy--yeah, his plans were poorly thought out and haphazardly excecuted, but I prefer borderline lunatics who take some action to languishing sad sacks.

I put my 2 cents in for Steve Zissou but I'd like to give an honorable mention to Bill Murray playing Bill Mutha F$%^$in Groundhog Day Ghostbustin' Murray (himself) in the best part of Coffee and Cigarrettes.

Quite right Leeroy.  I tried to pick more major film roles for the options available, but Bill playing himself (to some extent) in that film was one of my most favorite of his somewhat recent film appearances.
