The MTV Movie Awards - the Anti-Oscar
Check out the group’s new list of nominees for Hollywood’s most edible-looking award, the Golden Popcorn, a la MTV.
I know what you’re wondering. Why is a list of films nominated by MTV included in a group about the Oscars? Well, I’ll tell you. First, this time of year is kind of slow for yardsticks by which to measure which movies are best. Second, this group is not just about the Oscars themselves but about what is best and what Oscar should have labeled as best; everything is up for debate. Third, I’ve often heard the Movie Awards described as the “Anti-Oscar” due to its irreverent categories, such as Best Fight and Best Kiss, and due to the fact that the nominations tend to thumb many noses at Oscar and its traditional stodgy or artsy stuff.
Actually, I’ve also heard the Movie Awards described, even by reputable movie critics, as possibly a truer measurement of what the average consumer is interested in at his/her local Cineplex. The key demographic toward which movies are marketed, 18-25 year olds, represents the largest portion of MTV’s viewing audience. As such, a variety of movies get nominated, including traditional Oscar fare (see Brokeback Mountain, Walk the Line, and Memoirs of a Geisha); big blockbusters (see Harry Potter, Star Wars, King Kong, and Narnia); and gross-out or slapstick comedies (see The 40-Year Old Virgin, Deuce Bigalow, The Dukes of Hazzard, and The Wedding Crashers). Horror movies, Hollywood’s number 1 moneymaker currently (due to low production costs and relatively high returns), is represented by its own category, Best Frightening Performance.
Therefore, I believe discussion of the Movie Awards belongs in this group if for no other reasons than to compare against Oscar and to add an element of fun to a group devoted to an awards show that has arguably become stale in recent years.
What do you think? Who would you vote for? If you would like to vote, go to www.mtv.com.

Re: The MTV Movie Awards - the Anti-Oscar
Ok, I haven't watched the Movie Awards (and may not have the chance), but I remembered they were on last night, so I made the winners list. Anyone seen the broadcast who wants to talk about it? Anyone have any thoughts about the above?
From the winners list, I would say that it was pretty much as expected...whether good or bad. I also took it as I should maybe see more of those movies, though I've already seen about half. Thoughts?

Re: The MTV Movie Awards - the Anti-Oscar
In process: this year's lists for the MTV Movie Awards. Discuss all MTV Movie Award related discussions here! I caught snippets of it online. My, that Sarah Silverman. How delightfully inappropriate, eh? Otherwise, it was seemingly a boring show, though it was fun to see Mike Myers out and about. I keep waiting for something new and interesting (read: not Shrek or Austin Powers) with him in it to come along. Someday! Anyways, the explanations for why I've made this a category for the Oscars group are provided above. Have fun!

Re: The MTV Movie Awards - the Anti-Oscar
I view the MTV Awards with only passing interest. I did not mark my calendar waiting for the broadcast. But if MTV decided to re-air it and I just happen to be flipping the channels at that moment, I might watch it. My problem with the Awards show is that I will only see about half of the movies nominated. Where as, when Oscar season roles around, I'm there at the theater trying to watch every one. I couldn't tell you if Taladega Nights or Blades Of Glory was any good because I passed on those. But they seem to be the movies the MTV generation flock to see. So I take note. The problem with the MTV awards is the integrity behind it. The awards are determined by the so-called 14-25 market who only see movies with a passing interest. Besides, they talk too much during the movie, I'm surprised they even remember what it was about. But I digress. And MTV seems to be making it up as they go along be adding new catergories that are more cute than relevant. I'm referring to the "Best Summer Movie You haven't Seen Yet Award". But then again, It's all good fun isn't it? Remember when they gave Chewbacca a career achievement award? At least with the Oscars, there's a selected pannel they will take this awards thing seriously. And they can be a little more socially relevant by giving United 93 a nomination instead of picking the best spoof movie of the year.
