So, what is the greatest movie of all time?
I thought I'd rephrase the question, considering there were no takers on that last question about whether Citizen Kane is the greatest...
Do you think it's one of the AFI's Top 10 -
1. Citizen Kane 2. Casablanca 3. The Godfather 4. Gone with the Wind 5. Lawrence of Arabia 6. The Wizard of Oz 7. The Graduate 8. On the Waterfront 9. Schindler's List 10. Singin in the Rain?
Or, one of the other movies listed (go see the list)?
Or, some other movie that didn't make the list? What do you think?

Oooh...I've only seen 6 of those films. I don't know if my opinion would be well-enough informed. And the only ones I've seen more than once are "The Wizard of Oz" and "Gone With the Wind." Hm. I have to think about this...and watch "Casablanca" again, before it's due at the library.

Some good choices. Too bad Heat or Man On Fire is missing from that list, but I didn't make the list. Even Star Wars (Original Trilogy) should make that list.
Gessh, I've only seen The Godfather, Gone with the Wind, The Wizzard of Oz, and Schindler's List. All of them deserve their spots in the top 10. But what does it saw about Hollywood where a list like this contains the majority of movies that are 20+ years old. Where did all the good story tellers and actors go??

Re: So, what is the greatest movie of all time?
Just some notes: Heat did not make the list, true. I love that flick, but it did not get nominated for any Oscars or any awards and is probably, at best, a three-star flick (out of four).
Which Man on Fire were you thinking of? The most recent version is 2004, and the AFI list was made in 1998.
Star Wars: A New Hope was #15 on the AFI top 100. So, it made the list, just not the top 10.
As to your last question, I often ask myself that last question. On the other hand, the people who compiled the list are probably, at the youngest, Baby Boomers (Gen X'ers if being liberal). There are some edgy films, like Pulp Fiction, on the list, but certainly they favor older movies. I think storytelling is key: I find myself thinking that so many of today's movies are recycled, from remakes to predictable scripts to books-to-film. On the other hand, some really great movies have come out post-2000 that would not have been considered. Maybe another list will be created someday.

Re: So, what is the greatest movie of all time?
True. I understand the compiling of the list. It was just my interjection. 2004 Version with Denzel Washington. Both movies I really enjoy and they battle for best movie for me.
I'm not sure why Heat didn't get any Oscar nods. That movie was on par with any Godfather, Goodfellas, or Crime Drama in existance. Not only was the acting and story incredible, for me the small things like the acuracy of the firefights and the character development was outstanding.
True. Hollywood has remade so many movies. Some remakes have been good, the majority just blow chunks.

Are you saying only movies from the United States? Because I think the AFI limits themselves to that when making these lists. In which case Citizen Kane usually seems to be the consesus.

Re: So, what is the greatest movie of all time?
The AFI, or the American Film Institute, does limit themselves to movies from the US. There's no limit in this conversation, though. If there's a movie that you feel surpasses Citizen Kane, offer it up! After all, Oscar and the other awards shows don't limit themselves to just American cinema. The AFI list was included just as a sort of yardstick to start the discussion rolling.
