It's Almost Time! Oscar Buzz 2007
Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it. If you don't eat turkey or give thanks this weekend, at least know that Thanksgiving weekend marks the beginning of the Holiday film season.
And, of course, the Holiday film season is comprised of three types film trends: holiday blockbusters, movies about the holidays, and Oscar's last minute (Oscar season), when all films trying to achieve nominations are released before the eligible year expires.
The broadcast is February 25, 2007, and the timetable is in place for nominations. If you haven't heard, Ellen DeGeneres is the host this year, and I think she's a great choice, inspired even. She's hosted the Emmys and the Grammys in the past to success, and of course, she's funny.
Also, for you Oscar-watchers out there, I'll be including the four major predictors for consideration, becaue it's not just about the Golden Globes anymore. The aggregated results of four awards shows offer the best help in predicting who will win Oscar (though the talk and buzz has to be included if you're making predictions). The four awards shows are: the Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, the Screen Actors Guild awards, and the Directors Guild awards. Those awards shows occur pretty much one after the other leading up to the Academy Awards, and the nominations for each will get announced starting in December. They all have official websites, which I will post as nominations get announced.
How about now, though? What movies are you hearing buzz about? What movies do you hope to see get nominated? This conversation is dedicated to discussing the major buzz preceding this year's (2007) telecast. Let Oscar season begin!

Re: It's Almost Time! Oscar Buzz 2007
The LA Critics have spoken. Here's the press blip from IMDB (from Dec. 08):
LA Critics Pick 'Letter from Iwo Jima'
Is there a favorite emerging? After picking up the National Board of Review's top honor, Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima was also named Best Picture by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association on Sunday. Though the Japanese-language World War II drama nabbed the group's biggest award (and Eastwood was the runner-up for director honors), overall the LA critics favored The Queen, which took home four awards, including Best Actress for Helen Mirren and Supporting Actor for Michael Sheen, as well as screenplay and score honors; the Queen Elizabeth II drama was also the runner-up for Best Picture. The Best Actor award was a split decision, going to both Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland and, in a bit of a surprise, Sasha Baron Cohen for the hit comedy Borat. Other major awards included United 93's Paul Greengrass for Best Director, Luminita Gheorghiu for Best Supporting Actress for The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, The Lives of Others for Best Foreign Language Film, Happy Feet for Best Animated Film and An Inconvenient Truth for Best Documentary. --Mark Englehart, IMDb staff

Re: It's Almost Time! Oscar Buzz 2007
Jymkata, your wish may be granted, as far as Helen Mirren. This is the DC Critics. It'll be interesting to see what happens during the Critics Choice awards. I think her nomination though is in the bag. There are some other consistencies too, but it's too early to tell.... Noms for the Golden Globes come out tomorrow, I believe.
This is from IMDB news (Dec 12):
'The Last King' & 'The Queen' Reign at Washington Awards
