Introducing myself to the group.

Hi,

My name is Justin Russell. I currently reside in the U.K.

For as long as I can remember,I've been fascinated by stories in all the different mediums used to tell them.

From books to comics to the grand stage of cinema I've absorbed stories  to feed my imagination and

expand my knowledge of the world we all live in.  Stories  are life.

And the medium that can reach almost all peoples has to be film.

As long as you have somewhere to set up a screen and projector, and have a seating arrangement, this most

visual of mediums can communicate the stuff of life.

This basically is me. Stories have owned me almost my whole life, and my addiction grows ever stronger.

I have been reticent in following the path in front of me almost all my life,of being a part of the process of telling

stories. So,I'm starting at the bottom, with an Open University starter course in the Humanities, to absorb

different aspects of culture and hopefully read some stories as well.

I'll just let this path lead me to other paths and see what my destination is at the end.

This is basically me,an addict forever of all sentences starting with: "Once upon a time..." and a bit pompous

      in tone,really.

Anyway, that's me,feel free whoever is reading this to send me a message. I may be a bit tardy in replying, but

I'll get back to you. Eventually.

                                                          Best regards,Justin Russell.

Re: Introducing myself to the group.

  • Hi, my name is Melly. I'm from Crazy, Gay, Mu-Mu wearing a-go-go-land (ah, but which one?) I love movies to death, how they explain how we live, our life, everything. I love indie films escpecially. I'd like to go on about a phenomena that really shines my buttons as far as movies are concerned. This phenomena is called "The Shiver Moment". This is my first blog and because no one was reading it, I got bored and decided to post in on a discussion pannel. Yes, I'm that pathetic. Anywho, read below and tell me what you think.  Another question: How the f*** do I un-Bold this stupid print? It won't let me un-bold.

  •       I have, in movies, what I call "Shiver Moments". They're moments in films where I'm simply watching the movie and all of a sudden I get goosebumps. These are the type of goosebumps which arise from more sensual scenes in movies, rather than exhilarating thrills, like car chases or explosions, although some car chases and explosions aren't even exhilarating or thrilling, they're just dumb. Anywho, I have three distinct Shiver Moments, or rather senual scenes that have given me goosebumps involuntarily.

1.) Amelie- The scene where Amelie goes to the carnival horror ride and "The Ghost" whispers into her ear "ooooooo" and delicately plays with her neck. You can see the excitement both parties are derving from this close contact: The Ghost, zero-ing in on her neck and collarbone, Amelie, closing her eyes as he breathes into her hair. You can almost feel the heat from his breath as he talks. There is also an element of Anonimity. Amelie knows who HE is but he doesn't know who SHE is. Ahhh, love that scene.

2.) Rebecca- The Scene where Mrs. Danvers is taking the heroine through a tour of Rebecca's old room. I know, I know, why the hell would I pick that creepy scene? Well, The part where Mrs. Danvers picks up the fur coat and brushes it against the heroine's cheek gets me everytime. I connect with the heroine, I can feel the texture of the fur as it's hurried across her skin. And the part where Danvers is pseudo-brushing the heroine's hair, like I can feel the brush being pulled through my own hair. This scene is very sexual, in the way that movies made under the hays code can possibly be sexy. The obvious lesbian tendencies Danvers has, the masculinity of her role, the meek, female role our heroine has been put in. The see-through underwear Danvers shows to the heroine. It's all very discreet, but sexual nonetheless.

3.) Girl with a Pearl Earring- The scene where Greet is posing for Vermeer, where he asks her to part hir lips and lick them. "Now lick your lips" he says, she does by putting her bottom lip under her top lip. "Again" he asks, she does, "Again" he asks, his trailing off, she does. Scarlett Johannson plays the part of Greet, and if you pay attention to that sort of thing, you'll notice she's fairly well-endowed in the lip department. There is a theory that explains why men feel so attracted to full-lips, reasoning that plump lips remind men or, rather people, of the labia majora (the lips of the vagina) which, of course, remind people of sex. That movie is so detailed and rich, each scene seems like a Vermeer painting.

I was sure I had another one, from a more recent film I'd watched, but I can't think of it now. I'll keep you all updated. Tell me what you think, send me messages, let's discuss movies please.

Wow thanks for that.  And what is that giant spider doing in your avatar!  No matter.

I get shiver moments like that too, but usually not during the same kind of sexual moments.

They are usually more spiritual moments I would say.  Not that sexuality can't be spiritual, but I can't think of any that are explicitly so at the moment.

    Here's a few examples.

In The Seventh Seal.  Well this movie might have the most shiver moments for me actually.  I mean yes I get physical goosebumbs.  It's awesome.  It's happens many times often on queue.  OOOh I'm getting them just thinking about it.  I'll say the moment when the girl has her one line "It is finished" is one of them.  Oh also when they are burning the "witch" and Antonius Block and his squire are trying to look into her eyes to find meaning.

Also the scene in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly when they finally reach the cemetary and Tuco is running around past all of the grave sites.  The music there and just the the feeling that this is where everything must end!  AAAAAAUGGH GOOOOSEBUMPS!

I should seriously make a list these moments.

Wow, I feel rotten because I  haven't watched The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in a loooonnnnnggg time. I've never heard of this "Seventh Seal" movie. What's it about? Yes, yes, the spider is going down on the lady in my avatar. But it's a French poster, you understand? I was positive I had another one, but I can't think of it! Do you have a top 10, 15, 20 etc. best movies in the entire world? Or are you like me and just have a few juicy, best mothereffing movies on the planet but have yet to catergorize them all? Also, how do I make lists and create links?

The Seventh Seal?  It's probably Ingmar Bergman's most iconic movie, and my favorite of his of the handful that I've seen.

So that picture is from a French movie poster?  Is it from a French movie?  If so, what movie???

I haven't made a list of my top 10 or 20 movies.  I used to have one in the past that I listed on a different website, but I think that site is defunct now.  And that was years ago so I would have to make a new one, and that would require a whole lot of time and fighting for myself about which ones should make the cut.  I do have a list on Spout of my absolute favorite movies though.  Basically everything I've given 10 stars out of 10.  Right now there's 141 items on the list.  Some of them are TV shows and other miscellaneous stuff that aren't necessarily full movies.  But here is the list.

If you want to link movies, just use that link icon at the top of the field where you type your messages.  Then you can paste the link for the movie page on Spout.

To make your own lists go up to "my stuff" and click on "my movies".  Then click the Lists link and you should be able to figure it out from there I think.  When you are on a movie page you can look on the left side of the page for the icon to add that movie to one of your lists.

Awesome.  I'm excited to see what you come up with!

I also get the shiver moment whenever listening to the music of Brian Dewan.

Ah, I wish I lived in Hawii! No, I live in Crazy Gay Mu-Mu wearing a-go-go land (which is actually accurate considering my town is the ONLY town I know of where a blatantly homeless crazy man can walk into say, a hastings, wearing a Mu-Mu shouting about how he's going to be a fashion designer one day) I swear to you this happened.

Oh, I've heard of Ingmar Bergman. I hear tell he does alot of that intoolectuell stuff, *h'yuck*. Just kidding. Well, I ought to rent some Igmar Bergman then. It sounds interesting. I WISH that poster was a French Movie! It's actually a French poster about the repercussions of AIDS, and it's acutally a two part piece. The other part is right underneath the spider going down on the lady, it's a picture of a man having sex with a giant scorpian (missonary style of course. Isn't great how the French just let it allllll hang out?) Anywho, There aren't any words on the poster, but I think the message is "Protect yourself, or the results could be poisonous". I would so totally make a movie about that poster, I'm not even kidding. Thanks so much for the tips, I've got it all figured out! I have looked at some of your lists and whew! there are alot. That's amazing! Good job. I wish I had enough money so I could rent all of the indie movies I wanted to. Thank Mrs. Robinson for The IFC channel!  Have you ever seen IFC? Or any of their documentaries? Very, very good.
