Movies we loved as children

We all had to start somewhere, right? What were movies that you really liked when you were a kid? These could be movies you liked at the time, but hate now, or movies you've always loved. Doesn't matter.

My top childhood favorites (In no particular order):

1. The Secret Garden
2. Fairy Tale
3. James and the Giant Peach
4. The Princess Bride
5. Labyrinth
6. Beauty and the Beast
7. The Lion King
8. Time Bandits
9. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
10. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Hee hee. I remember being a big "Ernest" fan when I was a kid. It's been a long time since I've seen those movies, but I think I was particularly partial to "Ernest Goes to Jail."

I saw Ernest Goes to Jail in the theatre, and I distinctly recall me and my best friend thinking it was the greatest achievement in the history of cinema. I've matured a bit, I like to think, but I still think Jim Varney was a very underrated comic talent. His television show was stupid and silly but also fairly subversive and misleading in it's intelligence. Which is a weird thing to say, I know.

I totally agreeeeee!

Has anyone seen Dr. Otto & the Riddle of the Gloom Beam?  I have this on my Netflix queue.  I guess it shows the true origins of Ernest, but really the movie is about the evil Dr. Otto.  I remember him from the Ernest TV show, but I've still never seen this movie!

I was a big fan of Mary Poppins, I always wanted to have a tea party on the ceiling or have my room magically clean itself up.

Re:Movies we loved as children

Sorry I'm a bit late to this thread; just joined the group.  :-)

Most of the movies listed I saw (and loved) when I was in my twenties or later, so my most-loved movies as a kid are primarily from the Sixties:

Mary Poppins (of course)

The Sound of Music

Gay Purr-ee

Island of the Blue Dolphins

The Sword in the Stone

The Jungle Book

Zotz

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

But a good many of the movies I loved best as a kid were older films seen on TV that weren't exactly children's movies.  I loved most things with Shirely Maclaine in them, like What a Way to Go, or Cary Grant (The Bishop's Wife), Gregory Peck (The World in His Arms), Rex Harrison (The Ghost and Mrs. Muir), John Wayne (The Quiet Man), etc.  (Though the version of Dr. Doolittle that Harrison was in was just awful.)

I loved Mary Poppins because she could jump into paintings and dance with penguins and ride horses from the merry-go-round. Plus there was the flying on the ceiling and the flying in general and the telekinesis! Holy crap Mary Poppins was soooo coooooool!!!!!!!!! (I'm surprised my mom let me watch this in hindsight.)

Mark Kermode did a really neat post on his blog about the top ten reasons to love Mary Poppins. It's pretty fun. I love that he mentions the Mary Poppins horror trailer. I get such a kick out of that video.
