ZODIAC

This has nothing to do with 'Horror' really, but with the popularity if the new movie Zodiac (2007) - Details - Spout,  I just wanted to share this tidbit with my fellow 'Movie Fans'...

Few people know that the original  Dirty Harry (1971) - Details - Spout  was actually based on the 'Zodiac- Killer' case, and the lead detctive who dedicated his career to hunting him!

Re: ZODIAC

You know, trosman5, it was like that with Fight Club, too, another Fincher flick.  I don't know if this is a marketing tactic employed by Fincher or by his distribution/production company (more likely).  The Fight Club DVD I have is basically the movie, a couple of commentary tracks (I like the one with Chuck Pahlaniuk, the novel's author, and Jim Uhls, the screenwriter/adapter), and maybe one featurette.  The ultimate edition (titled something related to soap, I think) has two full discs of stuff with several featurettes, all the commentaries and that sort of thing, hidden Easter Eggs styled after the "more you know" public service announcements with Ed Norton saying things like, "Your urine is sterile.  You can drink it."  It's pretty cool.

Re: ZODIAC

I'm sure I'm biased to this film because it's the one that permanently vaulted my interest in film in general, but I'm fairly sure that Fincher's flagship work was Panic Room.  Moody, atmospheric and nigh-on-noirish, it's a self-contained system, a sure-fire setup for dramatic powder-keg happenings.  It's not just the confined, almost claustrophobic environs or the darkly lit, dire ambience, but the predictable unraveling of three individuals united for a sole purpose - the acquisition of money.  That purpose alone is a tenuous foundation for teamwork, but when its fulfillment is coupled with numerous and considerable obstacles, you can guarantee the number of shares the booty is divvied into will be getting progressively smaller the further along it goes.  ;)

If you're into deep gore, drag your bones over to http://www.bloodgutsandgore.com.  Please ignore the image difficulties and the lack of updating in about six months (as of 8/8/07) as things have been...interesting and varied over here, plus my connection is such that even accessing my own site now takes eons.  I will, rest assured, have superior equipment (satellite internet anyone?) and be able to post the last dozen updates and be back to "normal."  ;)

Re: ZODIAC

Although I cared very little for Panic Room unlike all of his other works that I think very highly of, your description of the film is just great, the last sentence is particularly insightful. God, how true that seems to be.

I quite enjoyed Zodiac and went on to read the 2 books  that helped frame the film.  The film seemed to speak to Robert Graysmith/Jake Gyllenhaal's obsessiveness ( surely a good thing ) apparent between the lines in the books. I enjoy seeing that sort of thing played out,  how some thing, maybe simple, maybe very complex, grabs, enters, and envelopes the pysche and just will not let go until some sort of passionate thing is done ( or madness???)...there was that great Jim Garrison/Kevin Costner 'gotca' moment in JFK, that seemed to say it all to me.

Re: ZODIAC

I haven't read the two latest works on the subject, but I do have one that purports to have the answer, same as one (by published M.E. Patricia Cornwell) that alleges to unravel Jack the Ripper.  I must rip into them shortly now that the subject has been revived...;)
