What was the last film that scared you?

Okay, as fans of the horror genre, we are all used to the tricks and blood found throughout horror films.  We watch them for the fun, for the nostalgia, and for the gore.  But what was the last horror film that for you truely lived up to the genre as a film that legitimately scared you for whatever reasons?

For me, it was The Descent.  It made me jump on numerous occassions.  I haven't been on the edge in a film like that since the Texas Chainsaw remake.

For me, the last movie that truely scared me was "Darkness Falls" ...  I have had MANY a nightmare about creatures such as this...

Although it kept switching between horror and action film, The Descent was a well made film that had quite a few moments that made me jump. Very claustraphobic atmosphere only intensified the terror.

I don't get too scared by movies any more.  Although I always think I am going to.  I don't seek out too many horror movies because I honestly to still think a good one is going to really leave a horrible impression on me.  It's almost the hype that scares me more.  I'm often actually more affected and frightened by a lot of movies that would be considered "drama" and not at all "horror".

Then again, I don't really seek out too many horror movies for that reason, and I still believe there are some out there that may get me.  I've got The Exorcist on my queue which I've still never seen, so I guess I'll find out about that classic soon.

Back when The Blair Witch Project came out, I was pretty freaked by it.  But what mostly kept that fright sustained was that I was working at a warehouse that summer where I had to drive home through dense forest area every night after dark.  So it was just dense trees all around me and my headlights.  I prayed every night my car wouldn't breakdown, or I would have just sat there and shit my pants.

One that left a mark on my more recently, because I could somewhat identify with the evil character, and also because of the incredibly creepy music was the original Dutch movie The Vanishing.

forrest_gump...  I think your intellect is akin to your namesake and I would ALMOST not think your post is worthy of a reply but I could not resist so here goes...

I thought "The Ring" was quite the terrifylng movie, indeed...   BUT, it was NOT as scary as "Darkness Falls"!   and here is why...   if you have EVER had ANY experience with 'ghosts' or 'Demons' or 'otherworldly creatures' of any kind, then you would KNOW that there is probably NOTHING more terrifying than hearing a 'noise', next to your bed, in the middle of the night, and opening your eyes and seeing 'something' stareing back at you!  This is not any fun at all...

As for "SAW", I have a few problems with this movie...   How was 'Jigsaw' able to lie MOTIONLESS on the floor in the middle of the room for HOURS (!!!)...   SURELY they could see him BREATHING (!!!).... I would have figured that out and escaped from there 'unscathed'...    I thought this movie, while entertaining, was also quite silly...

Maybe he was freakish enough to be able to breathe so shallow that they didn't notice.  Maybe they were also too hysterical to really notice either.  Eh, it's not likely, but maybe.

Re: What was the last film that scared you?

Dear dr_Gor, i really didnt mean to heart you anyway! really!

i am just so surprised! it was just my opinion..nothing else! i never compared Darkness falls with the ring! never...

you can love a movie..and one must have the right to dislike or like it!

when i was young i still can remember an incident that was more like a scary nightmare near to the case happened in darkness falls...i cudnt sleep for a week. remembering that incident i made the remark that it can frighten the children..i had no intention to make fun out of your opinion! may be i expressed it in a wrong way!

i loved your reply anyway and the first line too ` forrest_gump...  I think your intellect is akin to your namesake and I would ALMOST not think your post is worthy of a reply'

jigsaw was a professional...and they were in a terrible position too...the way jigsaw was sleeping (backside up) and the distance between him and others i think can be a factor.

what do u think?

another question is it a horror or thriller?

how can we define the genre horror? what a horror film must have?

No Worries, Mr. Gump!   You didn't "heart" me.... and I apologize for my 'terse' reply!   It is a PLEASURE to have you in my humble group and PLEASE keep the postings coming!   This is why I started this group... because I LOVE ALL Horror Movies and I LOVE to talk about them!   Also, I am very interested in EVERYBODY'S opinion on this subject!   We ALL love different movies and each and every one has it's own merits, as well as it's own shortcomings... I am interested in talking about ALL aspects of the 'Horror' genre...   I am also a 'wannabe' Horror Author and I have a story that is about halfway finished that I have been working on for about the last 15 years (!)... I began working on this story when I was in jail out of boredom(!)....   however, I have found the process to be long and tedious for me as I did not even go to High School!   9th grade was as far as I got! ( I DID get my G.E.D., however)   I had to quit school and start working full-time when I was 15...   It is a long story... (I got in a lot of trouble back then...)

Anyhow, as to your other question, MY definition of "Horror" is VERY broad, indeed!   Yes, "SAW" IS a Horror Movie...  as are MANY others that some 'purists' would not consider 'Horror'...   I have talked about this elswhere in this group and listed many examples....   Basically, MY definition is, ANY movie that puts people in a "horrific" situation.  There are MANY so called "Sci-Fi" and "Thrillers" and "Action/Adventure" movies that fall into this category.... I will not start listing them here but I think You get the Idea...   if YOU think it MIGHT be a 'Horror Movie', then I probably consider it to be a 'Horror Movie' !    What others think of this is their own opinion but this is MY group and I will discuss ANYTHING that even vaguely resembles Horror!   PLEASE keep the input coming and THANK YOU again for joining my humble group!
