Movies aching for a prequel
I heard this on the way to work today and thought it might make a good topic: What horror movies are aching for a prequel? my first thought would be A Nightmare on Elm St. I would love to see Freddy before he was caught and burned alive (a child killer without evil powers is scary enough for a great horror movie). You could also get into better reasoning for his "afterlife dream powers".

I'm kind of shocked now that I think about it how many sequels there are to some of these horror franchises, but no prequels. Or am I just missing them?

There have been some (texas chainsaw the beginning; the exorsist the beginning). or the "re-imaging" of classics (halloween) which goes in a bit more detail, but not many good prequels.

In the late 80's (about '88 I believe) there was a very brief lived TV series called "Freddy's Nightmares" . The very first episode of this series was titled "No More Mr. Nice Guy" and it dealt with the origins of Freddy Krueger. Brilliantly directed by the legendary Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), this thing was genuinely creepy and scary and had some insane amounts of gore for a TV show! This SHOULD have been a feature length movie... I think it would have been a hit!

I think a great one to do a prequel for would be The Lost Boys, I know the sequel was shit but I think that if the prequel focused on the origin of David and if Keifer Sutherland played the part again that it would be worth watching. On a side note I just saw the original Prom Night and I loved it!

Re:Movies aching for a prequel
I was just thinking about prequels the other day, and I have to admit that I can't think of a single prequel that is actually good.
The closest I could come was The Godfather part II, which is both sequel and prequel.
The horror ones don't tend to do well though. I think one of the mistakes a lot of horror sequels make is to explain something about the past of a given villain... which does a lot to ruin the mystery of said villain. The prime example is Michael Myers. The sequels attempted to explain why he was attacking the kids (Laurie Strode was his sister!), which took some bite out of the original film... part of the terrifying thing about the original movie was that you didn't know much about why Myers was attacking these people. He was seemingly killing these people at random... and at the end of the movie, he disappears and Carpenter gives us a montage of places he's been... or could be. The Zombie remake goes a lot into Myers' past, endowing him with the stereotypical serial killer childhood and taking away all the mystique...
So in some cases, I think it would be a bad idea to do a prequel for some horror movies... others, maybe it would work fine... who knows?
