Movie classes that I'll be taking in October

I just wanted to let you know that I am taking two different classes in October and half of November.  One is called Schlock Cinema which is going back to watch B rated movies and discussing what was happening at that time in history for the movie to be made.  The other class I am taking is American Horror Movie and how it corrilates to history.   So I will be watching movies and also learning something on every Tuesday and Thursday night next month and part of November.  Yes, I really didn't think it through when I signed up for both classes, but it just sounded like something I would really like, 2 times a week might be a little much, though.

I will try to post what I watch and what I learned, someone might find it interesting.

That's sweet!  I keep thinking I'd love to take some film classes!  Especially in Chicago, there are lots of opportunities.  I guess I was just lazy to never sign up, and now I'm just broke.  But where are you taking these classes at?

I will be taking one at Shoreline Community College and the other at North Seattle Community College.  Shoreline Com College is really close to my apartment but North Seattle is still close but in traffic it will be challenging to get there on time.  I was actually looking for an art class and an exercise class but found these two.  I don't think I'll get much exercise in but it will be fun.

That's cool that they are right out of a community college.  Those classes can be a good bargain I heard.  My girlfriend took a decent sewing class at one recently.

You are right that movie watching is probably going to give you the opposite results of an exercise class.  ha!  But let us know how it goes.

Re:Movie classes that I'll be taking in October

Sorry everyone, work has been so horribly busy that I’ve been exhausted when I get home and then my singing practices, whew.  So I wanted to report on my class – UNFORTUNATELY, they canceled the American Horror movie class because of lack of attendance.  I really think he needed to promote it better because I just found it by chance.  So I was disappointed about that.

But thank god, my Schlock Cinema class is still going strong.  I absolutely LOVE this class.  The teacher is such a character; he has actually been in a few bad B movies back in the 60s and 70s (he is a lawyer by trade) but just has a passion for all movies.  He teaches the class wearing a Professor’s cap and gown and has met a lot of famous people and has some really great stories to tell.  Our first movie we saw last week was called Man in the Attic with Jack Palance and Frances Bavier (Aunt Bea in Andy Griffith) in it.  It was a lot like the Lodger (the old silent movie that Alfred Hitchcock directed).  The premise of the movie was about Jack the Ripper and how everyone was a suspect.  We all thought this movie was too good to be a bad B movie.  It was made in 1953 and the scenery and the acting were very good.  I thought Jack Palance did a lot of OVER acting but all in all, it wasn’t too bad.  It all started when Jack Palance came to the door to lease a room from an older couple who were having some money problems.  After he decides to move in he goes into the room and starts turning all the pictures of women who are actresses around to the wall so he won’t have to see them (Aunt Bea thinks this is very odd) then that is also when the woman noticed the man carrying a black bag and heard that a man had been spotted carrying a black bag after the murder of one of the Prostitutes.  She then starts to suspect him but her husband tells her she’s being an old snoop and to mind her own business.  Then her niece comes to live with them, who is, of course, a beautiful actress which he falls in love with and decides maybe all actresses aren’t so bad.  He tells the story of his mother who was an actress who then turned into a prostitute…he was a very troubled child.  Anyway, trouble ensues after that when a young detective in Scotland Yard also falls for the beautiful actress.

What Professor Fred told us is how difficult “Aunt Bea” was to work with.  Even Andy Griffith and Don Knox both said she was cold, uncaring and just didn’t like people very much (a little different from her on-camera persona).

Last night we watched an EXCRUTIATINGLY BAD movie called War of the Robots by Alfonso Brescia.  It was made in 1978 around the time that Star Wars came out (but this was NO StarWars).  I think he also directed some of those old Spaghetti Westerns so in the movie there were a lot of over the top close-ups.  Antonio Sabato also starred in it (his son really looks a lot like him but without the years of smoking and wear and tear on his face).  I just don’t know what to say about it.  First there was a kidnapping of a scientist and his “beautiful” assistant (she looked a LOT like Jeannie, same eye makeup and hairstyle) by these alien men in gold suits and kind of page-boy blond haircuts (think Children of the Damned all grown up).  Then a group of soldiers? Go to rescue them, mostly because the captain (Antonio) was having an affair with the Assistant, although one of his crew members named Julie (who looked a lot of Ziggy Stardust) was in love with him, everyone of the crew would always comment on it but the captain was blinded by Jeannie.  Anyway, it was one battle after another, the editing was horrible, the camera man kept shaking the camera, some of the dubbed voices were hilarious, especially this one guy that was suppose to be from Texas.  There was treachery, murder, mayhem and it felt like it was 4 hours long.  When we thought it was ending we would all be so relieved but then another friggin battle would happen (it was only 93 minutes long but it felt a lot longer).  Anyway, I would NOT recommend this movie to anyone.  There were some parts in it where it was sooooooooooo bad that it is good, but mostly it was just boring and bad.

Next week we are going to see Door to Door Maniacs with Johnny Cash in it.  Now that is supposed to be HORRIBLY bad because Johnny Cash cannot act.  It’s also supposed to be very grim and depressing.  Hopefully it will be so bad we can laugh at it.

Sounds pretty interesting.  Thanks for the rundown!  I hadn't heard of any of those movies.

What is the class like when you aren't watching the movies?  Are there discussions?  What does the professor have to say about these movies or Schlock film in general?
