Portable Cinema

Hello fellow Grand Rapidians!!
Every once and while throught the summer the Portable Cinema project screens free outdoor movies in various public parks and open spaces throughout Grand Rapids. Tonight, Thursday the 13th, is one such night.

there will be a screening of Friday the 13th at dusk in Eastown's Wilcox Park. It's of course totally free- you just need to bring a chair, probably a blanket, and definitely some bugspray for this location!!

I am really excited about seeing this movie in this location because it is so dark and woody. spooky!

more info about this screening!!

Re: Portable Cinema

Yes, George, it will be spooky. Freaking spooky, I think. I hot, muggy night in the woods watching camp counselors get murdered by a guy in a ski mask.

I'm scared thinking about it.

Re: Portable Cinema

Sounds like fun, if it were only a different movie! :-(

Not big on horror flicks.

It's not even scary anymore, just great. I'll bring my bugspray.

Re: Portable Cinema

Thanks for a great time last night! There were about 30 people, great atmosphere, a bug zapper and camp counselors getting slashed. I can't wait for the next one! See you all there.

Re: Portable Cinema

Portable Cinema is presenting American Graffiti Thursday July 27th at Brian's Graffiti wall on the corner of Cherry and Sheldon. There is a parking lot next to the wall and we will be there. Things get started around 9-9:30ish.

AMERICAN GRAFFITI
The Graffiti Wall, NW corner of Cherry & Sheldon
9:30PM FREE!

Hello Everyone!
Man, remember when George Lucas shot film? There will be a free showing of one Lucas' finest film classic AMERICAN GRAFFITI at the Graffiti wall on NW corner of Cherry & Sheldon, which is just a little south of the UICA (and on the same side of the road). Drag Racin'! Cruisin! Hoppin' Socks! It's the perfect film for these increasingly hot summer nights!! But, this screening of AMERICAN GRAFFITI will occur in a parking lot so bringing a chair is a good idea!

Even more than the chance to unleash a truly WICKED pun, screening American Graffiti at the graffiti wall has given us the chance to make this whole movie watching thing a little more participatory. The graffiti wall is an ever evolving open wall for local graffiti artists to hone their skills and work collaboratively to create some epic temporary works (all of this is really good, because frankly, many local artists REALLY need the practice.) While we will be painting the screen over the existing art, you are invited to cover it all back up once we leave. Free wall, dudes!

Re: Portable Cinema

I feel like I've missed out on so many screenings, I feel like others need to know about this little project to bring interest to community happenings. I die a little inside each time I hear people say that there's nothing cool in Grand Rapids... I'm pumped about Portable Cinema, I hope you don't mind my word of mouth advertising.

<p>UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG<br />
Thursday, Sept. 14 9:30pm<br />
The Blue Bridge, Next to W Fulton St.<br />
OUTDOORS! FREE!</p>

<p>A friend of mine remarked recently that the since the Grand River is headed west, its eastside would be considered Grand Rapids' Left Bank. This is true, i think. And to celebrate this discovery - as well as all of this pleasently rainy weather - Portable Cinema is pleased to announce a FREE screening one of our favorite films from EVERYBODY'S favorite French New Wave parrallel movement (the Left Bank, get it?) Jacques Demy's 1964 masterpiece THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG literally on the river, midway on the blue pedestrian bridge next to Fulton ST. </p>

<p>A film "for all the young lover's of the wide, wide world," UMBRELLA'S OF CHERBOURG is one of the left bank's most stunning and formally experimental films, rife with absolutely brilliant color design and in homage to the classic American musicals of the golden age - staged as a full on opera where every line is sung and every scene is impeccably choreographed. And top of all that, UMBRELLA'S OF CHERBOURG is the very first film to feature a very young Catherine Deneuve. Deneuve was 20 at the time this film was made, and truly gave an international star-making performance. </p>

<p>As this screening will occur right on top of our very own rive gauche, we recommend you bring a chair for sitting on a very concrete bridge and to dress warmly as well as to bring blankets as it is sure to be a little windy. </p>

<p>****</p>

<p>Oh, and there are few other matters of business this week too!!</p>

<p>we are teaming up with spout.com to try to get a screening of the film FOUR EYED MONSTERS setup in Grand Rapids. FOUR EYED MONSTERS is being distributed in the most DIY way i have ever seen - with all screenings being determined by petition. If we can get at least 150 people in the Grand Rapids area to request the film we can get a copy sent to us to show. The last time i checked, we had 64 signatures and were just barely beating Lansing and well behind Detroit. I consider this a full on city fight! We can take on these highfalluting central and eastside jerks! CITY FIGHT!<br />
You can check out the trailer, and the completely addicted podcasts (these are what sucked me in...) <a href="http://www.foureyedmonsters.com/feature_film/">here</a>.</p>
<p>and make a request for it to be shown in Grand Rapids (if you want) <a href="http://www.foureyedmonsters.com/index.php/request_film/?49501">here</a>.<br />
i know it says 49501, but it makes a lot more sense to put in 49503, i think! </p>

<p>Also, we have finally sold out and are on myspace.com now. you can be our friend (also if you want) <a href="http://www.myspace.com/porcinegr">here</a>. </p>

<p>As Jenn Schaub would say, "thank you for reading down to the bottom!"</p>

<p>love, porcine!</p>
