Shunji Iwai

Shunji Iwai is definitely one of my favorite directors. The first film of his I saw was All About Lily Chou Chou which has come to be one of my favorite films with its style, edting, cinematography.

Since seeing All About Lily Chou Chou, I've seen several of his other works: Hana and Alice, April Story, Love Letter, and Swallowtail Butterfly. I enjoyed all of them very much. If you get the chance to see them, I highly recommend them all. Shunji Iwai, I think, makes movies which are very human (if that makes any sense, I'm not really sure what I mean?). Swallowtail Butterfly is different from the other mentioned films in general, but it's still a great film that isn't limited to a particular genre. Watch them please!

Sorry if what I'm saying about the films is incredibly broad, but please do watch them when you can!

Oh I was just reading about All About Lily Chou-Chou a short while ago and am quite interested.  I heard someone call it a Japanese version of Kids.  Does that sound accurate in the least?

Hmm..., I've not seem Kids, although from the details it seems Kids is more extreme in subject matter? I do think they sound similar in terms of theme concerning modern youth and its problems.

Well I've always been so much more intrigued by Japanese kids anyways.  It really is such an unusual culture.  In some ways so close to our own, yet they take so many things is such wild and unintended directions.
