Re: what do you think of the 1-18-08 teaser?
It was better than the entirety of Transformers, that's for sure. I don't know. It has potential. But I fear that the marketing campaign will be better than the movie. And I fear that too much information has been dug up about it. I caught a preview of Transformers the week before it was released, so no one was buzzing about the trailer before I saw it. And the trailer blew me away. Not since (coincidentally) the trailer for Blair Witch had I been so floored. I spend so much time reading up on upcoming movies and such that it almost never happens that I don't hear of a movie before I see its trailer. This one... no clue at all and I was shocked I hadn't heard of it. I wish Paramount had been able to keep a tighter lid on it and made sure that no information leaked out to the public at all. January 18 is a long way away... so much time for people to dig up every last spoiler for the movie. Once the test screening reviews start popping up, the novelty will wear off before any of us even see it... kind of like Blair Witch. And then once we get a full-on trailer with more footage, it will likely be ruined for everyone. Unless, of course, it really is that good of a movie.

The growling sound reminded me of the sound the tripods made in War of the Worlds, before firing. Which reminds me that I probably knew everything there was to know about that movie before I saw it, but I still liked it. So, yeah, I guess if it's good, it's good, and if it isn't, we'll just ignore it. One thing about Abrams with Lost when it started was that he could just slowly roll out the plot twists. But if he does that in this movie, we'll hear about all of them in advance. No suprises.

The handheld camera effectively places you on the scene of a catastrophe like this. The reactions, timing and relationships feel raw and sincere. It's very similar to the way I felt and several of my friends felt in NYC on 9/11. May be a little too much for me to handle, though I hope enough time has passed to be able to see it. (The way Lady Liberty's head flies off it almost looks like a Planet of The Apes prequel) I love Lost, and I'm excited to see that Abrams is a part of this thing. Hopefully the buzz won't give too much of it away.

What I read made it sound like the whole movie is going to be handheld POV. Hard to imagine. Could really get on your nerves? Not to nitpick, but if it were a Apes prequel and the Liberty head comes off, it would have to get put on again, wouldn't it?

Re: what do you think of the 1-18-08 teaser?
I thought it was absolutely brilliant in terms of a huge viral marketing campaign! Remember...Blair Witch Project and the Superbowl commercial for ID4. Both were amazing trailers that created huge buzz....and both movies were not horrible by any means My thoughts.....could be Cthulu or a new IP....but with Abrams behind it and his ability to create excitement with MI:3 and such.....i expect it to be good..... Shame that anytime someone in the film community tries to do something different, these internet freaks with no knowledge on how a movie is even made starts chiming in that because it is this or made this way that it is going to suck.....be optimistic people! dont create an opinion until it hits theaters!!!!!! PS: Did go to film school......do make movies.....I am a critic that is paid for my reviews....Suck it fanboys!

Re: what do you think of the 1-18-08 teaser?
It looks really interesting. I love this kind of marketing for a film. Start early and cryptic and get people excited while still leaving them pretty much in the dark. I'm sure as December rolls around we'll see some more traditional trailers, but hopefully they won't give too much away. I think it would be amazing to have none of the marketing for this film actually reveal what the "monster/alien/whatever" actually is or even looks like. They should just roll out a couple more trailers almost exactly like this one, but progressively getting more intense, to the point where you not even sure what's going on, but you know you want to see the movie to find out. The only thing you ever see is the chaos/destruction caused by whatever this thing is, but you don't even get a glimpse of it. I know I'll want to see it more not knowing what's going on.

Last time this happened, I was there opening night with a garter snake in a Mattel Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
