Recast THE SHINING (1980)

Check out the winners at the bottom of this thread.

________________________________________________

Grand Rapids is filling up with snow, and getting snowed in always makes me think of The Shining (1980).

I've read that Stephen King didn't like Kubrick's movie, but the  made-for-tv version (1997) that King supervised is nothing to write home about. Maybe the third time's a charm?

Recast The Shining. Best recast gets a t-shirt. Winner announced Friday, Jan. 9.

Jack Nicholson     ...     Jack Torrance

Shelley Duvall    ...     Wendy Torrance

Danny Lloyd    ...     Danny Torrance

Scatman Crothers    ...     Dick Hallorann (the chef with the shine)

Barry Nelson    ...     Stuart Ullman (general manager of the Overlook)

Philip Stone    ...     Delbert Grady (the ghost of the previous caretaker, who tells Jack to "correct" his family)

Joe Turkel    ...     Lloyd the Bartender (ghost)

Tony Burton    ...     Larry Durkin (ghost who shows Jack visions of murdered girls)

Re:Recast THE SHINING (1980)

MERRY CHRISTMAS Y'ALL!!!

So, in order to get y'all in the spirit, I decided to do this re-cast using characters from classic Christmas movies.............................. hope you like it.

1. Jack Torrance - Yukon Cornelius (Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer) Instead of an axe, he breaks the door down with his ice pick. And we replace the "Here's Johnny" line with "Didn't I ever tell you about Bumbles?..... Bumbles Bounce!!!"

2. Wendy Torrance - Little Cindy Lou-Hoo (The Grinch) "Santee Clause.... Why are you trying to kill your family??"

"BECAUSE ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES BUMBLES GO CRAZY BITCH!!!"

3. Danny Torrance - Ralphie (A Christmas Story) In this story, the Shine is actually a middle-aged man narrating his family's holiday torment. I can hear it now.. "What my old man did next has been the source of Cleavland Street controversy for years to come..."

4. Dick Hallorann - Rudolph ...His nose is a super sensitive transciever device that allows him to communicate telepathically to Danny's narration. The only problem is Danny's always exaggerating about how mean his dad is so Hallorann never takes him seriously.

5. Stuart Ullman - Burgermeister Meisterburger (Santa Claus is Coming To Town) I love this movie because it tells us about the true history of Christmas. Apparently, Santa Claus was a freedom fighter against the Nazi regime of Summertown that outlawed all toys. Santa fought for the rights of all the oppressed little girls and boys with guerrilla tactics and breaking and entering............ Jewish children were not mentioned in this film because they do not celebrate Christmas.

6. Delbert Grady - Jack (Nightmare Before Christmas) Former Oingo-Boingo frontman Danny Elfman not only provides the score for this film but he comes back as the singing vioce of Jack. He tells Jack to kill his family with a song and dance rendition of "Dead Man's Party."

7. Lloyd the Bartender - Jack-be-nimble (Babes in Toyland) "Whoa?!?!"............. That's his only line. Plus he keeps watering down the drinks. It could make anybody want to REDRUM their family.

8. Larry Durkin - George Bailey (It's A Wonderful Life) When we last saw this icon, he was enjoying his new lease on life. Unfortunately he partied a little to hard on New Year's Eve and fell off that damn bridge anyways. So now he's back,  but this time it's for revenge....It's true what they say about whenever you hear a bell ring. But what they don't tell you, is that everytime you hear an elevator door open, an angel gets set on fire.

Dead Mans Party - Oingo Boingo

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and REDRUM.

Emery

Re:Recast THE SHINING (1980)

Wow, what a challenge!  Here's what I'd do:

Casey Affleck as  JackTorrance

Maggie Gyllenhaal as Wendy Torrance

Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick as Danny Torrance

Forest Whitaker as Dick Hallorann

Jon Voight as Stuart Ullman

Tchéky Karyo as Delbert Grady

Steve Buscemi as Lloyd the Bartender

Omar Epps as Larry Durkin

I know Casey Affleck isn't that old, but with a little make-up (and maybe if he grew out his beard) he'd be OK.  I think he's an amazing actor.

My Cast

Just saw this again recently, it's a really good movie.

Jack Torrance: Matthew Fox (He can play crazy really well, he just needs a longer haircut and a persona other than Jack)

Wendy: Charlotte Gainsbourg

Danny: Some young child actor who is unknown right now

Hallorann: Morgan Freeman

Ullman: Aaron Eckhart

Grady: Phillip Seymour Hoffman

Lloyd: Christopher Lloyd

Larry Durkin: Mahershalalhashbaz Ali (He was really good in the Curious Case of Benjamin Button)

Re:Recast THE SHINING (1980)

I'd probably first get Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) as director and Spike Jonze as principle photographer.  I'd reset it in the American south west, in a resort hotel in an isolated area that gets very few people in the summer months because it is just too hot.  This changes the dynamic a bit and gives us something else to play with (the heat gives us maddness instead of the cold).

I would also use a primarily hispanic cast of characters, trying to get the feel of the American Southwest.

Bencio Del Toro     ...     Jack Torrance

Salma Hayek   ...     Wendy Torrance

Rocket Rodriguez (the son of robert rodriguez)   ...     Danny Torrance

Lou Diamond Philips ...     Dick Hallorann (the chef with the shine)

Javier Bardem  ...     Stuart Ullman (general manager of the Overlook)

Benjamin Bratt   ...     Delbert Grady (the ghost of the previous caretaker, who tells Jack to "correct" his family)

John Leguizamo   ...     Lloyd the Bartender (ghost)

Edward James Olmos   ...     Larry Durkin (ghost who shows Jack visions of murdered girls)

Re:Recast THE SHINING (1980)

This was difficult to judge because I enjoyed every one of these posts.

First place --  Big_Eyes. Great all-around cast. Here are some of my favorite pickss:

Casey Affleck as  JackTorrance. Sure he's young, but he proved in Gone Baby Gone and The Assassination of Jesse James that he has real gravitas.

Maggie Gyllenhaal as Wendy Torrance. She has an innocent quality that really hooks me when she's in trouble, like in The Dark Knight. I would root for her and her son the whole time.

Forest Whitaker as Dick Hallorann. Whitaker's another actor who's great at playing innocent. As Halloran, he'd be a real down-to-earth, vulnerable hero.

Steve Buscemi as Lloyd the Bartender. When is this guy not worth watching?

Tcheky Karyo as the ghost Delbert Grady. That guy is great. How did he get in Bad Boys?

Second place -- gsanchet. Bold move to reset the film in the American southwest. I love a lot of the cast, especially Benicio Del Toro as Jack Torrance and Edward James Olmos as thes super-disturbing ghost, Larry Durkin. In these pictures, Olmos looks kind of like a grizzled, older Del Toro. Maybe he could play Del Toro's dead uncle! gsanchet, you deserve a t-shirt too.

Special nod to Leeroy711's Christmas-themed cast. I highly recommend reading his entire post while listening to the Oingo Boingo song he kindly embedded. I especially like the idea of Yukon Cornelius as Jack, breaking down the door with his icepick, and Rudolph as Dick Halloran, whose Shine emanates from his magical red nose.

Other nods...

alx -- Matthew Fox would be a great Jack Torrance.

doc-sarp -- People keep telling me I need to watch The Wire. Chris Bauer sure looks the part of Jack Torrance. And wow, Brendan Gleeson as Delbert Grady? Gleeson is such a lovable, avuncular figure, it woudl be truly chilling to see this guy telling Jack to 'correct' his family.
