The Day the Earth Stood Still (1969) -- Directed by John Boorman

Michael Rennie ... Klaatu ... Charlton Heston
When you think about it, Klaatu is one part Moses (Ten Commandments) and one part Captain Taylor (Planet of the Apes). There's nobody better for this role than Heston.

Sam Jaffe ... Prof. Jake Barnhardt ... Peter Fonda
"I'm hip to disaster." (Fonda says his famous line in response to Klaatu's warnings.)
Serious question: have you ever had a professor like Peter Fonda? I did, in a poetry class my freshman year.

Patricia Neal ... Helen Benson ... Raquel Welch
As you can guess, she falls for Klaatu. Her boyfriend isn't at all happy about it, either.

Hugh Marlowe ... Tom Stevens (Helen's boyfried) ... William Holden

Billy Gray ... Bobby Benson ... Jodie Foster
Roberta "Bobby" Benson is the comedic heart of the movie. This precocious 6-year-old is always trading light-hearted insults with Gort.
She also builds quaint inventions, like a microwave made from mirrors and a hairdryer. Pop culture scholars think her character inspired MacGyver.

Lock Martin ... Gort ... David Prouse
THE LAST SCENE:
Gort disintegrates Sam Reynolds before he can shoot Klaatu. Then Klaatu, Helen, Bobby, the Professor, and Gort pile into Klaatu's flying saucer and shoot away into outer space...
...Only to get into wild and crazy adventures, recounted on a weekly basis every Sunday night (1969-1971) in The Day After television series.
All the original actors were involved, except Heston. He wanted too much money, so the studio replaced him with David Carradine.
