Lack of interesting character dramas in The United States

I have recently become very interested in foreign films, especially films coming from Denmark.  These films are all relatively low-budget, but are much more interesting, provacative ultimately rewarding than much of what Hollywood produces for much more money and relatively often.  Why have foreign markets like this one been able to steer away from mindless blockbusters that we forget as soon as we finish watching them while simple intimate films like this linger in your mind long after viewing? Is the trend steering towards or away from big-budget action films?

I know 0 about the film business, but I do enjoy reading The Hot Blog, which provides weekly boxoffice figures and  daily info about the industry (http://www.mcnblogs.com/thehotblog/). This summer's sequel-fest of blockbusters suggests that the 14-year-old male demographic is still dominating the market in terms of production $$$. Peak before a decline or continuing trend? The sequels themselves mostly nuture the franchises with more of the same as before, only bigger, longer, and louder.

But having said that, my spouse and I watch... perhaps 5 movies a week at home, and come what may, there always seems to be one more interesting quality film out there that we haven't seen yet  (including foreign films, of course).

Foreign markets would hardly ever be able to compete with Hollywood in trying to make "blockbusters".  And the point of trying to make a "blockbuster" would be strictly for the competition and financial profit.
