Sarah Marshall ad campaign
So about a month ago I started seeing advertising in Chicago almost everywhere for a website called www.ihatesarahmarshall.com. The ads were everywhere. Billboards, on the sides of busses, on the tops of taxi cabs. It's just black writing on a white background that says "I hate Sarah Marshall". Now I had no idea what this was since the ad gives no information except for a web address. And since I don't usually go to websites just based on enigmatic ads all over the city, I never knew what it was. Until I kept commenting on it to my girlfriend about how stupid it was and she eventually found out it must have been for a movie.
I still have not heard anyone say anything about this movie, but apparently it's already out. I guess they were really hinging on this overblown ad campaign to bring people in. I have no interest. But then I heard my girlfriend's roommate mention something. What about all of the people in Chicago (or any other big city that might have this ad campaign) who are actually named Sarah Marshall. It must be a common name. A quick white pages search came up with 39 people in the Chicago city proper with the name Sarah Marshall. And what about all of the tourists? They have to come into town and see huge ads that simply says "I always hated you Sarah Marshall" and "Yes you do look fat in those jeans Sarah Marshall." Don't you think that's a pretty horrible thing? Maybe if the name was something totally uncommon like Conoleezza McYohobamslafhenhosenberg. But this is like having signs that say "F-U-C-K YOU MIKE SMITH!" You are offending a lot of people.
I actually just went to the site www.ihatesarahmarshall.com and wasn't even sure at first that this was an ad for the movie. It just looks like someone's blog. This new kind of viral marketing is confusing as well.

The Haunting in Connecticut Ad Campaign
No one ever responded to my original message in this thread, but I have another marketing campaing complaint.
Is it just me or are these horror movie ads just getting sicker and sicker? I can understand the appeal of horror movies, but I want to be in the right mood for it. What I don't want is to be staring at these ads of gruesome images all day long on trains and on billboards everywhere in the city. Now we have gone beyond gruesome to just plane vomit inducing gross. The ads for The Haunting in Connecticut all have an image of some guy with a giant turd coming out of his mouth! It's not something I want to be looking at for more than two seconds of my life, much less extended periods of time over and over all day long. I thought there were certain regulations for what can be posted around town in ads. You don't see explicit sex on ads even though I'm sure it would sell lot becuase there are people regulating this stuff. You can't post slander or exessive profanity. So why is it ok that there is a man vomiting feces everywhere I look in public locations??

That one poster with the kid vomiting his internal organs / demons / whatever is pretty disturbing. I haven't however seen that one around town or displayed in my local theaters. Maybe the MPAA members are relaxing their stringent guidelines. I have noticed that a lot of movie covers at the video store are getting pretty racy. I hate the idea of restricting the content of a film but it shouldn't be put on display where little kids can get an unnecessary eyeful of gore / nudity.

ugh. Forget the little kids. I can't sleep at night with this shit everywhere. I am so glad I don't have cable anymore, I was always changing the channel during prime time tv because they insist on showing horror trailers in the middle of shows that everyone will be watching. They want as broad of a campaign as possible, but really can't they do some target advertising?

Exactly! There's a lot of movies with disturbing images I'll go see when I'm in the mood but would rather not have thrown in my face when I'm just trying to get to work.
