Rediscovering X-Files

Considering the X-Files ran for so long on Fox, it's probably odd that a sci-fi fan like me saw only a handful of episodes when they first aired.  I caught a bunch of re-runs on cable during the college years, but now... BLOCKBUSTER ONLINE!!!  DVD sets from the beginning!  My wife and I are midway through Season 4 -- lovin it.

Many of you have seen the entire series, but for me it's fresh.  We're trying to watch an episode or two each week.  Sure, production values were only as good as a TV show in the 90s would get you, but it holds up really well over time.  I need to start reviewing each episode, if for no other reason than to have my own personal log of what was good/not good.

Re: Rediscovering X-Files

Yes, I really enjoyed the X-Files when they first came out but then it started getting a little too OUT THERE for me.  I just really enjoyed all the scary parts and some of the Alien shows but then it kind of lost me for some reason.

One show that is like that now for me is Scrubbs.  When it was first on, I didn't watch it at all, but now I LOVE it and watch all the reruns on Comedy Central - Let's See, there were a few others like that too that I didn't watch when they first started but when they started doing reruns I really started enjoying it - of course I can't think of anything right now, but I know it will come to me.

Re: Rediscovering X-Files

The X-Files is one of my favorite shows of all time.  It's one of the few shows that was consistently well-written and will probably remain timeless until if and when aliens actually land on Earth.  That's even despite seasons 8 and 9 (the half-Mulder, no-Mulder seasons respectively), which were clearly the worst seasons of the series, but as I always say, the worst seasons of the X-Files are so much better than the best seasons of a lot of other shows, scifi or no.  Though I started watching the series live in or around season 3, I kept up with it until the end.  Now, I'm collecting the TV seasons (they are totally rewatchable and are my favorites) and am currently halfway through season 7.

Some of the best episodes were the freak-of-the-week or fright-night chapters.  I can't remember if it's season 4 or 5, but there is one episode that focuses on flashback and tells the story (sort of) of the Cigarette Smoking Man.  Have you watched that one yet?  That's one of my faves.

Re: Rediscovering X-Files

X-Files was so wonderful, It was the show that brought my group of friends together weekend after weekend.  The formula seemed oh so right.  Having an underlying story line that tinged much of the series but at the same time did not require you to see every episode to stay interested.  I miss shows like that.

The new movie will really push me back to my early college days and make me wish that it never left.
